It is about how we think, our faith in a brighter tomorrow, and how we treat each other. This book is just what this country needs to move forward."
- Willie Horton, Major League Baseball Legend and Detroit Tiger Great """Living in the Village, "" Ryan Mack offers the common sense road map that Americans need today in order to get their finances in order. This is not about ourselves, but being in position to create and pass on wealth to our children, or help others philanthropically. If we don't heed Ryan's advice now, then we will have no future. "
- Roland Martin, Host of Washington Watch with Roland Martin, CNN Political Analyst, The Tom Joyner Morning Show Senior Analyst

5.0 out of 5 stars B+ 25 Mar. 2011

Well, personally being a finance professional myself I usually find myself in the self improvement section at my local borders, B&N, etc....I've read Dave Ramsey, Suzy Orman and a few others...The only thing I have to say about this book is I really enjoyed the ''estimated budget'' section...That was helpful to me and I noticed it is an a lot more helpful than Dave Ramsey ""total money makeover section''....I just wished Mr Mack expanded on that a lot more. I guess you can't always get everything you want.I will say,I found chapter 6 very helpful to me particularly four and five when he went on to talk about the credit cards. I must admit I do have not only my american express , brooks brothers card and Jc Penney. I need to get rid of the ...JCP like YESTERDAY. After reading chapter 7 I noticed one thing that I am a total victim of ....when Mr Mack mentioned '''whichever card you choose do not use for everyday purchases....My weakness is American express...the reward points are like DRUGS. All in all, the book I would give it a B+ only because I really wish he would have expanded a lot more on actually breaking down your spending diary(pg 281)
5.0 out of 5 stars Convicting 28 Feb. 2012

I actually read the book twice in about a 1.5 week time frame. The title sums up what I thought. Having been the recipient of many classes, speakers, and presentations, I came away from this reading like I finally saw my reflection in the mirror for what it was. No matter how financially savvy you think you are, it cuts deep to come to the realization that sacrifice is the name of the game. The book was peppered with testimonials of people who went after their dreams, but not without sacrifice. One anecdote that resonated was the story of how people will trample over each other for a Black Friday sale (day after Thanksgiving), but just won't apply that same tenacious attitude when it comes to their finances.

I'm an entrepreneur. I started an investment advisory firm. The hardest part to launching your own business, if you are already employed, is leaving the comfort of stability and steady income to the realm of the unknown. I applaud R. Mack for providing some motivational speak. I constantly turn my finances over and over to see if I can scrape another $1 or $2 for putting into my business, all the while, letting my savings and retirement suffer. I've always known I need balance, but right before I committed the deadly sin of thinking "I have time to make it up," I read this book and it convicted me to get my financial house in order. If I'm not in good financial shape when I'm trying to launch a business, how can I change the world when I'm about to get evicted? Very eloquently put, Sir.

If you're like most, you weren't willed or left any large sum of money. You now have the choice; you can live for today and join the rest of the statistics who will speak in hind sight of what they should've done when they were younger, or you're going to sacrifice and make the tough choices to make a brighter future for your children. Whether it be as an entreprenuer or an employee for another business. You've got to just be willing to submit to the task at hand. It's going to require patience and sacrifice. It was humbling to read these words, knowing that he was talking to me. Reading this book was like watching a great movie. In it, you see some character that you relate to. They show you an example of how to overcome odds or deal with a situation with humility. When you see that character, you're immediately drawn to them. That's how this book was. I recognized so much of my situation is some of the testimonials written. Just as they proved that obstacles are meant to either go around or knock down, I felt empowered to prove my obstacles are no different.

I encourage any one on the fence about this book to pick it up. There are great resources mentioned within to help you find the information that you may not have known existed. It's important that you understand that life does not provide "do-overs." If you don't get it right early on, you may be destined to become one of the many ill-prepared statistics. We've got an opportunity to get ahead of the game. This book outlines the game plan to get you there.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE GREATEST BOOK! A MUST READ! 9 Feb. 2011
By Damian Smith - Published on Amazon.com

Ryan Mack writes a stellar book about financial literacy, one that our country (and the rest of the world for that matter!) desperately need. After seeing this book on CNN, I bought the book yesterday and I cannot put it down! Ryan does a great job at not writing about this from a "boring financial" angle that many people think of when they see "finance", but instead, he lets the village tell the story. These are stories about PEOPLE living in the community who have CREATED financial wealth for themselves and how YOU can learn from them! It is a very interesting read and not at all bland or dry. Instead, it is dynamic, entertaining, and above all, educational. They are inspirational stories of survival and triumph, with the age old question that everyone has on how to "make it" in a society. I URGE everyone to purchase their own copy of this book if they want to create the wealth they want and not live from paycheck to paycheck! THANK YOU Ryan Mack for this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT read, excellent format. 24 May 2012

I was fortunate to attend a speaking engagement on wealth building and entrepreneurship in Austin, Texas. Ironically, a book on fiscal responsibility was going for $20 in person, that I knew I could buy for $10 online. Still, I made the purchase -in person from Ryan himself, received a signing and now half way through the book feel the additional investment was worth it from the sheer amount of information in an easy-to-read format. So worth it in fact that I just purchased a copy for a younger cousin (in that pivotal early 20s age range) so that she has a solid baseline for understanding the importance of fiscal responsibility. As a homeowner at 24 years old I certainly wish I had this book 5 years ago because I'd likely have an even stronger set of fundamental values. I'm enjoying implementing the guidance I've received in this book and look forward to the 2nd half of the book, and passing forward the lessons to friends and family.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real Talk Finances for Real People 30 Mar. 2011

By far the most unique approach to financial planning/literacy I've seen in a long time. Sure, it's helpful to read about stocks, mutual funds and wealth building but without the principle foundations to back it up, any financial plan is bound to fail. Ryan Mack covers the basics first that so many of us either overlook as insignificant or something we already know. Clearly if we already knew it then there wouldn't be a need for this book! Further Mr. Mack reminds us of our responsibility in our financial mess as well gives us a charge to share it with our communities and beyond. That's what I love most about this book. Even though I have experience in the financial industry, I walked away with key tips and action steps I plan to intend to implement in my own personal life. Plus, the testimonies give an excellent picture of ordinary people just like you and me (sometimes in worse positions than us) who have overcome hardships to acheive financial empowerment. Bravo to Ryan Mack and his team for having the passion to write this book and share your wisdom!
