Product description

"A brilliant collection. . . . The funny and the tragic dovetail with precision and poignancy." -"The Philadelphia Inquirer "Hilarious and generous and true. Moore's work continues to astound." -"Newsday "Insightful and moving . . . A rewarding, even exhilarating book."" -"The New York Times Book Review "There's no other writer quite like Lorrie Moore. . . . Startling and wonderful." -"The Plain Dealer "Affecting and beautifully written. . . . Her keenly detailed language and unfailing generosity of spirit are irresistible." -"San Francisco Chronicle "Lorrie Moore is a dazzler." -"Chicago Tribune

From the Inside Flap

In Like Life's" eight exquisite stories, Lorrie Moore's characters stumble through their daily existence. These men and women, unsettled and adrift and often frightened, can't quite understand how they arrived at their present situations. Harry has been reworking a play for years in his apartment near Times Square in New York. Jane is biding her time at a cheese shop in a Midwest mall. Dennis, unhappily divorced, buries himself in self-help books about healthful food and healthy relationships. One prefers to speak on the phone rather than face his friends, another lets the answering machine do all the talking. But whether rejected, afraid to commit, bored, disillusioned or just misunderstood, even the most hard-bitten are not without some abiding trust in love. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Everyone said that she is the new John Cheever or Katherine Mansfield. I thought that the stories were fine enough but they did not hold my interest like Cheever. I could put them down and do something else. Rather underwhelmed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not a Love Life, a Like Life 7 Jan. 2015

I've been a fan of Moore since picking up Birds of America back when it came out. While her voice doesn't speak to every reader, those it does speak to can't seem to get enough. Her play with structure and language remind me of Miles Davis's advice to young jazz artists - "learn your scales and practice the hell out of them, then forget all that s*** and have fun with it." Something like that, anyway. Like Life is a younger voice of Moore's, one that might seem a bit esoteric and strange at times, but again just reading her makes me remember what made me fall in love with the short story to begin with. If you only have enough cash for one book today or you just want to see Moore at her best, get Birds of America. Then maybe Anagrams. Then either this one or Who Will Run the Frog Hospital depending if you're more a short story or novel fan. Get Self-Help if you're currently enrolled in a liberal arts program and read it in one day, in bed, while getting drunk on cheap hooch. Avoid Bark.

A friend introduced me to Lorrie Moore, I am so glad! Her writing is so vibrant and quirky and poetic yet "Like Life".
I am not usually a fan of short stories - but she won me over. I read her stories on the subway on my kindle and I have been blown away - almost missing my stop. I highly recommend her.
5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite book by Lorrie Moore 7 April 2014

This was the first book that i ever read by Lorrie Moore and it is by far my favorite. Every story was astounding in its lack of sensationalism. The narrative was so reserved and just genius. My favorite story was Two Boys, this one i had read years ago and it had stayed with me forever. I loved the story about a failing writer, and the one about parents in the Midwest who entertain a visitor. Wonderful wonderful work
3.0 out of 5 stars I wanted to love this, but 17 Dec. 2014

Maybe our moods are just not matched. I love her wit and language, and so notched it up a bit, but these stories are so bleak that I just wanted to be elsewhere. I'll try again in another season.

Ms. Moore reminds us that $#¡+ happens- then deals with it in the most dryly sarcastic manner ever. Love her.
