I bought this book as a christmas present for my mother but after flicking through it a couple of times (and salivating over the photos quite a lot) i decided to try out a few recipes. I was not disappointed, they're easy to follow, full of funny anecdotes and the results are not just edible (which is definitely saying something considering how badly I cook) but rather delicious!

I'm lucky enough to have visited both of their shops in London and am now content that I can recreate a small part of that at home!

I would have given this book a full five stars had it not had a printing error on the page for 'Fluffy Vanilla Marshmallows', which doesn't list all the ingredients. It's not too difficult to follow the recipe for another marshmallow recipe to make this up, but it's still quite a big error. I've made five of these recipes since buying the book (a recommendation in itself!) and I was very pleased with the results of everything except the cinder toffee, which calls for vinegar and honey, both of which taste very strong in the finished product and wasn't really what I was hoping for. The rest produced excellent results, the best being vanilla fudge. Although, I have found that the waiting and mixing times for the recipes - such as how long the mixture should take to get up to a certain temperature, or how long you should whip marshmallows, seems a lot longer than necessary.
Other than these complaints, the book is delightful - fun, witty, mouthwatering and all round beautiful to behold. Despite contacting the publishers about the recipe problem I've had no response, but I assume future printings of this book will correct the problems.

Lovely looking book with great pictures. Even if you don't make anything it's still a great book for eye candy. The instructions are clear and there is hints and tips with a lot of the recipes. At the beginning there is a helpful section on storing the sweets and a list of stockists at the back. I have already bookmarked a few recipes to try soon (coconut ice and syrup sponge nuggets...yum) and then plan my gifts for xmas. Great book to give as a gift.

I'm probably not the only person who does this, but I do like to read recipe books, just purely for the pleasure of reading them as much as to choose which recipes I'm going to try first - and this one is definitely the funniest I've come across yet! It's clearly a serious recipe book too though, from someone who really knows their confectionary (the owners of the lovely Hope & Greenwood old fashioned sweet shops). There's a great range of recipes, from simple chocolate truffles and classic creamy caramels to spicy chilli and lime flavoured chocolate shards, garden mint `peas' and unicorn mallowpops - perfect for presents or an unusual end to a dinner party. A beautiful book, full of gorgeous photos of tempting treats, this gets a big thumbs up from me.

I love the feel of this book - it completely manages to walk the fine line between quirky and over-the-top, while giving some amazing recipes for us to enjoy. I am not ashamed to say that many friends and family will be receiving this on Christmas day! Plus, being a bit of a tv chef connoisseur, I also think Miss Hope and Mr Greenwood would be great on TV, a breath of pepperminty fresh air after all the Masterchef craziness...

Unlike the Liddabit's Sweets and Candy Cookbook http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0761166459/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_img_sol_1 which I also bought at the same time, there aren't really many tips or techniques for sweet making, but as the recipes are pretty easy and straightforward, this isn't necessarily a problem. However, I have found the best approach is to use both books together, using "Liddabit's" techniques with "Life is Sweet's" simple recipes.

Most of the ingredients are store cupboard staples, with very few calling for glucose syrup. There are very inviting photos of the finished product to encourage you and the style is humourous and friendly.

Loved the book but really disappointed in the rose and violet cream recipe, have a friend who adores these and thought this recipe would be close to the Prestat version. Wrong assumption, have now wasted 2 boxes of icing sugar and have yet to end up with any thing that vaguely resembles pizza dough let alone that can be kneaded on a work surface - recipe is definitely not correct.

Now off to desticky my work surface again before heading off to prestat and buying something that works.........
