About the Author
ANISSA HELOU (anissas.com) is a food writer, journalist, broadcaster and blogger. Born and raised in Beirut, Lebanon, and Mashta el-Helou, Syria, she knows the Mediterranean as only a well-travelled native can. Ms. Helou is the author of numerous award-winning cookbooks including The Fifth Quarter, An Offal Cookbook; Modern Mezze; Savory Baking from the Mediterranean; Mediterranean Street Food; Café Morocco; and Lebanese Cuisine, which was a finalist for the prestigious Andre Simon awards and chosen as one of the Los Angeles Times’ favourite books. I have rated this book three stars purely for the non existence of accompanying pictures. I feel that in this day and age, customers expect value for money, and no good cook book compromises. I am hoping that this review will be read by the author and publishing house....and it would be great if an update is provided for this book so that no-one else is left disappointed in the future.
So, here's what I think..
The author is an acquaintance of mine so I'd be careful that my comment here is not misunderstood. Anissa Helou is a great cook and a brilliant author and I wholly and truly support her. True to form, the book is well researched and certainly shows her love of the region's amazing cuisine and flare.
There are no photos at all in the book, which might put some people off. It wouldn't me - but then again I know what these dishes look like.
However, based on the one recipe I cooked - which was rice pudding, I'd say treat the measures with a bit of discretion. I added a lot more milk than the recipe originally stipulated, or even the suggested top up, but it was still dry. That said, it was still most delish and very aromatic.
My copy is already got mucky fingerprints over it, I've cooked a few things out of it (Lamb shank and Aubergine is recommended) and it was amazing.
There aren't any pictures to it but it doesn't need them. The book is split into sections and goes beyond starter, main, desert... It has at home, at the restaurant at the bakery etc. So give's a different way on selecting a meal.
