Product description

About the Author

Lucius Annaeus Seneca (c.4BC - AD65) was born in Spain but was raised according to the traditional values of the republic of Rome. In AD48 he became tutor to the future emperor Nero and became his principal civil advisor when he took power. His death was eventually ordered by Nero in AD65, but Seneca anticipated the emperor's decree and committed suicide.

Robin Campbell is a well-known translator.

It's a nicely presented book, and of course it's Seneca which is always good. But I was disappointed to find that this is only selected works - I hate selected works. I like to decide what's important to me. Worse,it's not made clear when ordering it, that it's incomplete. We really need better transparency when making orders on books.

This work misses out for example, letter one - Seneca's timeless advice on using your time - no one will value your time as you do, so you, not they, must be its warden. You can waste time if you wish, but know on what you are wasting it and why.

Letter four, on the terror of death also does a vanishing act in this edition. 'No one can live a happy life who worries constantly about lengthening it'. This is actually quite an important foundation to Seneca's reasoning, so its absence is unwelcome too.

Letter ten also gets its marching orders in this volume. This is about the importance of reflection.

Thirteen on groundless fears incredibly, is omitted (a brilliant letter), as well as letter fourteen, on withdrawing from the World.

And so it continues. The translation itself looks especially good, so all those omissions are an added disappointment. I would have preferred at least the option to purchase a two volume set with the complete letters to a single mauled version of the great sage's work.

This is not political philosophy. It's a sample of stoic thinking: offering cause for resilience, inspiration, and gratitude for everything life can throw at us.

the print is far too tiny to read, the layout is appalling, it looks like some hack went and printed a word document

Unreadable due to tiny, tiny typeface. Have decent eyesight - and can not read.
