Review

Fast pace, enormous narrative power . . . Legends of the Fall stays firmly in the unputdownable class. * Daily Telegraph * Jim Harrison stands high among the writers of his generation. This book is rich, alive, and shatteringly visceral. A triumph. * New Yorker * Compelling . . . beyond question the work of a gifted and accomplished writer. * Washington Post * [Legends of the Fall] may well be the best set of novellas to appear in this country during the last quarter century. * New York Times Book Review * Legends of the Fall signalled that Jim Harrison was a writer who had the goods. * Los Angeles Times * So much American legend is packed into these brief pages that Jim Harrison must be admired as an almost sacred writer. * Chicago Sun-Times *

Format: Paperback
This incredibly moving story of a family torn apart by the brothers' love of a woman has to be regarded as one of the great epic novels of our time. The film, although a fabulous adaptation, does not do justice to the emotion created in the reader of the book by the sharp and painful contrasts between beauty and horror. Harrison creates for his readers a stunning natural backdrop which is contrasted with the man made horror of the first world war. The characters have a depth which makes them stick in the mind and our sympathies are shifted constantly by Harrison's fluid and elegant prose. Although the film tries to recreate the depth and beauty of the novel, something of the story's haunting power is lost.

I first watched the film "Legends of the Fall" a few weeks back and instantly wanted to read the story it was based on. It is a short "novella" style story with two other stories companying it within the book. All have the same flowing, descriptive text that draws you right in and transports you so that you feel like you are above the characters, watching their tale unravel beneath you. Although they have tragic theme's to them, they are not an everyday "tear jerker". Neither are they fast paced with twists and turns. I can only describe these stories as being "beautifully mournful". I would recommend this to anyone looking to read something a little different to the normal, predictable love story.

I, like many others purchased this book after seeing the film 'Legends of the Fall'. I fell in love with the film, and the book has lived up to my expectations. Though it is a short story, I felt the author wrote with such depth that it completely drew me in. His other stories as well in this volume are wonderful too, I'm so glad I made this purchase. Was delivered promptly, and is now a much loved part of my book collection.

I hate short stories. 40 years of reading fiction have convinced me that the short story is only relevant to a magazine, over a cup of coffee, whilst listening to the radio.
Then along comes Jim Harrison, 3 novella in a relatively slim paperback which I first read in the mid '80's.
This isn't about comparing the title to the movie of the same name; the stories are raw, visceral and explore a mans view of the world and how he decides to act within it.
Legends Of the Fall is very much a mans read. The main characters are male, and the stories are very much written from the main characters standpoint. The female characters, are, admittedly, drawn fairly weakly.

That two of the three have been filmed (let's not forget the Costner "Revenge" effort), if inadequately, should not detract from your purchasing of this magnificent, powerful, awe inspiring trio of stories, that confirms, in my eyes anyway, Harrison's greatness; this is some of the best fiction I have ever read.
As a reviewer said, so many years ago "Conscious of the all the dross that comes my way, here at last was something worth reading" and I couldn't agree with him more.

Truly Magificent.

The edition of the book sent to me bore no resemblance to the film even allowing for the poetic licence of a film. However MORE IMPORTANTLY, the actual contents bore no link either to the back cover synopsis and I felt the wrong story had been been put in the jacket?!! Can someone explain why 2/3rds of the edition contained 2 "novellas" nothing to do with the "The Fall" That story only app. 150 pages? A total mystery. Would not recommend this edition, totally misleading and I do believe it is NOT the complete version of "Legend of the Fall"? Would really like to request money back but have read book regardless...very disappoining.
