Fast pace, enormous narrative power . . . Legends of the Fall stays firmly in the unputdownable class. * Daily Telegraph * Jim Harrison stands high among the writers of his generation. This book is rich, alive, and shatteringly visceral. A triumph. * New Yorker * Compelling . . . beyond question the work of a gifted and accomplished writer. * Washington Post * [Legends of the Fall] may well be the best set of novellas to appear in this country during the last quarter century. * New York Times Book Review * Legends of the Fall signalled that Jim Harrison was a writer who had the goods. * Los Angeles Times * So much American legend is packed into these brief pages that Jim Harrison must be admired as an almost sacred writer. * Chicago Sun-Times *

Then along comes Jim Harrison, 3 novella in a relatively slim paperback which I first read in the mid '80's.
This isn't about comparing the title to the movie of the same name; the stories are raw, visceral and explore a mans view of the world and how he decides to act within it.
Legends Of the Fall is very much a mans read. The main characters are male, and the stories are very much written from the main characters standpoint. The female characters, are, admittedly, drawn fairly weakly.
That two of the three have been filmed (let's not forget the Costner "Revenge" effort), if inadequately, should not detract from your purchasing of this magnificent, powerful, awe inspiring trio of stories, that confirms, in my eyes anyway, Harrison's greatness; this is some of the best fiction I have ever read.
As a reviewer said, so many years ago "Conscious of the all the dross that comes my way, here at last was something worth reading" and I couldn't agree with him more.
