having recently completed a short course on Wellington and Waterloo, I have been following up on various aspects of the battle not covered therein.. A brief reference to the well organised French medical services has led me this brilliant humane surgeon who stood up to authority, taking his medical, surgical and after battle care to the highest degree possible at that difficult time. This book is to be recommended to those interested in French medical practice and associated social/military history of the period from the French Revolution and ensuing battles, on to Waterloo. The additional coverage of Larrey's personal/family commitments adds a touch of poignancy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Biography of a Great Man that Reads like a Novel 6 Jan. 2015

I came across Baron Larrey while writing about the 1830's. He died in 1842, and in the scene I was writing, one of the main characters, a street-wise child, is pitchforked into a medical emergency and needs assistance from a doctor. I had heard of Dr. Larrey, and I placed him in the scene. And then, interested in his full story, looked into his history. He was one of the most admirable and amazing characters in medical history. Napoleon's Surgeon-General, in an era of self-aggrandizement he was modest, he was one of the people whose actions helped to bring into being what we now call the Red Cross. This book, written by a physician, tells of the man without idolizing him, and conveys the self-deprecating, modest, humorous and courageous character of the man without going 'over the top'. I have enjoyed it. While telling of a good man, it was also entertaining . I expected a dry but informative read. I was greatly entertained. I wonder if Dr. Richardson wrote any novels?

Well-written, balanced, enjoyable. I give it five stars.
