Winifred Holtby's third novel, dating from 1927, is a somewhat more substantial work than her first, Anderby Wold, although still rooted in the realms of popular fiction rather than serious 'literature'. It does, however, share some of the earlier novel's features : a spirited young woman inhibited by an unsatisfactory marriage; the intervention of an unconventional stranger who may offer a way out; a near tragic death; the setting of an enclosed (and, here, prejudiced) rural community; the possibility of a new beginning. What lifts this novel onto a higher level are the descriptive passages of the East Yorkshire landscape and a subsidiary story about the arrival of a group of foreign workers and the tensions that are set up between them and the locals. This is a theme that has an obvious contemporary relevance. The author sometimes lets her imagination run away with her but this is a quite compelling piece of work within its genre, although not as memorable as South Riding.

Format: Paperback
This a more mature novel than Anderby Wold, but deserves more than the paltry 2.5 stars caused by a reviewer who is complaining about getting the wrong book rather than reviewing this one. It's more naive and less well constructed than South Riding, but well worth a read. Sometimes the less good books are more revealing about the time in which they are written. This one has a real feel of its time, but is still worth reading now.

I really enjoy Winifred Holtbys writing . It has stood the test of time. So sad she died so young.
