Product Description

Review

‘Many books have been written about Rommel. None has been more thoroughly researched or examines his personality and character in more detail than this one… Fraser gets under the skin of this man as well as any biographer ever can.’

Even Churchill praised Rommel; enough said? And, Ian Fleming's Bond admires him; do you need any more evidence.
Rommell fought a decent fight and observed the more decent laws of war. But, many of us know that. This book is very thorough and makes Rommell walk, talk and breathe
It's real strength though is in analysing his contradictory relationship with Hitler. A soldier's loyalty to his commander was unquestioned - until very late - by Rommel, the Desert Fox simply not believing what Hitler could do. For this, and many other reasons, this is a superb work. It is worth also looking at 'The Desert Fox' starring James Mason as Rommel. Made in the 50s (alarmingly close to the war), it reflects the spirit of the book.

Generally good, but a large part of the text concerns various maneuvers in the field - and I mean maybe 30%... Pages and pages are filled with things like - 'the second armoured division advanced to wadi wobbly then swung North' and the like. The problem that I just find it impossible to follow, and only a couple of tiny line maps are included which simply show a blank sheet with a line for the coast and a few names. The book cried out for proper detailed maps with forces identified and positions marked with arrows for directions. As it stands, unless you have very good memory and can imagine maps in your head it's just a mass of description of random movement.

A real shame as it has obviously been superbly researched, it's just very difficult to follow. I advise a detailed map of the area, a notebook and pencil and maybe you'll be able to piece it together;-)
