This review is taken from my blog where I review adult colouring books from a mental health perspective. More images, a review of the US edition and a comparison between the UK and US editions can be found here - colouringinthemidstofmadness.wordpress.com
This book was purchased by me for my personal collection. The book itself is 25cm square, the same size as the previous UK editions of Johanna’s books, ever so slightly smaller than the US editions which are all 25.4cm square. It’s paperback with flexible card covers with two third French flaps which open out front and back to reveal a beautiful colourable large-print bauble design. The covers are white with black text, the spine is black with white text and gold foil stars and Christmas trees; the cover has loads of gold foil accents, it’s a bright gold (yellower than the foil used on the UK Magical Jungle) and I personally feel it’s a bit overdone and looks a little tacky and gaudy! Upon opening the book, you find the beautiful title page, followed by the copyright page, name page, and Introduction, including colouring tips from Johanna. Unlike Johanna’s previous books, there isn’t a treasure hunt element, this has been replaced by the quest to find a flock of 63 hidden robins though you may be left scratching your head if you can’t find them all because there are no answer pages at the back. The spine is glue and string-bound making it pretty durable and with a bit of work it’ll lie quite flat. The paper is pale ivory, the same as UK Magical Jungle, different from the US edition of this book and Magical Jungle (those both have the same paper). The paper is a whiter colour and slightly thinner than that in the US edition but is equally as thick as the paper in Secret Garden and Enchanted Forest, and far thicker than the paper in Lost Ocean.

I'm a huge fan of Johanna basford but I'm disappointed with the lack of creativity in this book... its not very intricate and there is loads of free space on the pages... If your not an artist then filling the page is impossible... I can see why in the space of about 10 days the price was reduced to half price practically, if this is the way forward for her books then she will loose a lot of customers and fans!! However what is there is pretty but not much to go with on the pages... Most are single pictures to colour!!

I love Christmas so I can not resist any Christmas colouring book coming on the market. But, this book does not stand out from the rest I'm afraid. It's just one among many. Why? Because Johanna Basford started to listen to the artists who colour in her books, enter competitions and go all the way, making master works of her drawings. In her pre-flip-through of the magical jungle, she brought this up. That she is making less detail so that all amazing colourists can create their own shadowing, blending and what not. And to my disappointment, this is the second book in a row which is geared towards these people, the amazing colourists. There are way too many big areas to colour in. To make amazing things of, IF you have that talent. For the rest of us, it is like a children's colouring book except most of us do not colour with crayons. We colour with coloured pencils and these big areas will just look striped and "blotchy". Even with "wet" pens, big areas come to look that way. I fell in love with Johanna Basford's books early on because of their DETAIL! That was something never seen before and the detail makes amateur colourists' pages come alive and look pretty no matter what! Even I could create something pretty. Now only a few can create something beautiful and then you might want to ask yourself, were we not important enough? Was our business not valuable?
And what is this idiotic thing about pull out pages? Who on Earth would like a page pulled out of a colouring book, that I have sat and coloured in? Something they can do themselves? And why would I put it in a frame and hang it on the wall? It's Christmas images which will be current for about a month in Sweden, less in other countries?
The book also feels stressed to me.

I am so disappointed in this latest book.
This book is a collection of images that you need to add artwork to to make look nice. Where is the intricate details that were present in her first three books. Seems to me that JB has either got lazy or run out of ideas because she has created pictures with too much white space, where she expects you to add to the images. What if you cant draw? I think she has been thinking about creative people when creating this book, what about the fans that cant draw and just want to colour, were they not worth thinking about. I am so disappointed in this book and clearly im not the only one. There seems to be alot of people who think jb has created this book with the artists in mind and not her less creative fans. I buy colouring books because i cant draw and this book is geared towards artists who can add to the images. Seems to me jb needs to remember what made her famous in the first place she seems to be leaving behind the very fans fell in love with her books in the first place. Please go back to the beautiful intricate books that we all know and love, not sparse, simple childish designs. I have saw some of the designs coloured online and the ones that have no added artwork just look empty and unfinished Never again will i be purchasing a johanna basford book. If you want a Xmas colouring book try The Night Voyage by Daria Song, this book is packed full of detail and you dont need an art degree to complete it. JB has got caught up in all the amazing colourists who add to her pictures and has forgotten about the fans who want to colour.
