`Jodo Way of the Stick' is a short, but interesting, introduction to the martial art of Jodo. This has some anecdotes about the authors time in Japan, History of Jodo, information on the Jo and Gi, before covering various techniques and ways of applying them. The techniques are clear to read and there are black and white photos throughout to further clarify the points raised. Ultimately this is best used in conjunction with training with a Sensei at a dedicated Jodo Dojo and this would make a worthy reference book for use before and after classes. This was originally written in 1984 and hence the style is a little dated now, but overall this is a clear and informative look at this art and is worth considering at some point.

Mr Finn has produced a book covering some of the bare essentials of Seitei Jo, including the basic kihon and kata. The book is well illustrated with pictures, making it easier to understand the basic forms, although some of the illustrations are in the wrong order, confusing rather than explaining. There is a good outline of the evolution of Jo, but also some rather introspective personal anecdotes. As the kata are subject to review and change, some kata are no longer practiced as he illustrates. This book is helpful for beginners, but should not be used as a sole source for training - go to a good dojo, get current instruction, and then this book will prove useful for reminding you what you need to do in broad terms, until experience takes over.

For anyone looking to discover the world of Jodo, no matter what your level of experience, this book is a great starting point. It contains an overview and history of the art of jojutsu as well as detailed step by step descriptions of the katas with easy to follow photos. I would reccomend it to anyone.
