5.0 out of 5 stars Prolific And Influential Tolkien 27 Dec. 2015
By thirdtwin - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
To some Tolkiens work seems cliché but he's never been more popular even in the mainstream. And there's no denying that his work has influenced every work of fantasy that has come after it- whether writers were copying him- or responding to him by going a completely opposite way- or parodying his themes. His influence has even stretched into other media.
5.0 out of 5 stars An essential for every Tolkien scholar 10 Jun. 2014
By James Attwood - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover Verified Purchase
This book is an essential piece for anyone wishing to study Tolkien, his life, and his works. Gathered here are many tidbit pieces of information that many Tolkien scholars would be hard-pressed to find. Along with raw information, there are analyses of many of the entries and how they pertain to Tolkien and his life.

High expectations for this book..while good....In general well researched....At other times the fact checker took time off.....as errors do occur....and some of the articles make unsupported claims....this book is not for the casual reader

4.0 out of 5 stars Beware the Kindle version 7 May 2014
By KAS - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition
The most extensive, best-researched Tolkien reference work in print. I use my library's edition all the time, and was excited to see an affordable digital version finally available. The trouble, however, is with the searchability of the Kindle version... in that I wasn't able to do keyword searching in the Kindle app on my iPhone or iPad. And no hyperlinked entries. After working w/ Amazon customer service, they didn't know to fix it either. In the end, I had to flip page-by-page (which is torture in a large encyclopedia), and requested a refund. (Which they gave me.) Maybe the search function works if you have an actual Kindle device, I don't know. But if you're planning on reading this on your Apple device, beware.
