Review

"Fresh and intriguing, with characters so real I ached for them. I loved I Found You" (Clare Mackintosh)

"I’ve never read a book by Lisa that I didn’t love. In this case, I ended up reading the whole thing in a day which is always a pleasure, and makes you feel as if you’ve had a little holiday from your own life." (Jojo Moyes)

"I LOVED I Found You. A proper thriller with wonderful characters." (Sabine Durrant)

"Lisa Jewell just keeps getting better. I thought nothing could top The Girls, then along came I Found You. Three separate strands, three very different characters with one dark mystery at its core. With another writer, I would be trying to solve the mystery by chapter two, but Lisa’s books are so deliciously immersive, like a warm scented bath, you don’t want to jump ahead to find out what happened, preferring to lie back and let the story wash over you. The plot of I Found You is gripping and compelling but, as always with Lisa. it’s the characters that drive the book. With the possible exception of Anne Tyler, I can’t think of another writer who so gets to the heart of what it is to be human, in all humanity’s flawed decency. I Found You is a wise, compassionate, gripping tale by a storyteller who totally gets people - acting well and acting badly, but mostly muddling through trying our best." (Tamar Cohen)

"I Found You is exciting, entertaining and a crackingly good read … Lisa Jewell knows exactly how to drip feed information that compels the reader to want to read more and more and I found myself unable to put the book down … A perfect read. This is the first time I’ve read one of [Lisa’s] books but it certainly won’t be the last." (Linda’s Book Bag)

One horrible rainy day Alice Lake looks from her cottage window out towards the sea. She can see a man sat there all on his own, getting wetter by the minute. She offers him the use of her ex-lodger’s coat, now unused, as he has since left the area. He accepts the offer and huddles down under the coat. She is intrigued by his behaviour and keeps watch from the inside of her cottage, eventually deciding to offer him refuge. She finds out that he is polite and well dressed but also very confused. He does not know who he is, where he is or any details at all about his life. She gives him a name and decides to help him try to regain his memory, all the time becoming more and more involved in his story.

In Surrey Lily Montrose is getting very worried. Her husband of three weeks, Carl, who you can usually set your clock by, has not returned from work. The police are not unduly worried and call by to collect his personal effects so that they can begin checking him out. As time goes by with no clues to Carl’s disappearance, Lily is surer than ever that something sinister has happened. She is insistent that something is wrong. When the police tell Lily that her husband has a false passport she phones his mother, who she has not yet met but has spoken to on the telephone, and is extremely puzzled when the lady who answers the phone denies all knowledge of Carl. Lily enlists the help of a friend of Carl’s and begins investigations of her own, hoping she will be able to find out what has happened to Carl.

In 1993 Graham and Kirsty are on holiday with their parents once again, staying in Rabbit Cottage. The family are having a day on the beach when they meet Mark who is staying in the family seaside holiday home.

I still remember my introduction into the world of Lisa Jewell. It was her book Vince and Joy that I got as a freebie with a magazine that sucked me in and never let me go again. Lisa has a way of keeping hold of you inside her story. She has a way of making her characters believable and alive in a way that you end up having some kind sympathy even for the bad ones.

I Found You is a marvel. Right from the first page I felt I was a secret party to a story of many lives unfolding in a brilliant style that Lisa Jewell masters. It made me wonder what I would do if I found a man on that beach – man like ‘Frank’ as Alice’s family name him. What would I do if my husband disappeared like Lily’s.

Even though they do not know it for good part of the book, the lives of Frank, Lily, Carl and Alice are intricately intertwined and come to a head when secrets are revealed and memories are restored. Lisa makes you wait for it, only hinting a little and not giving much away throughout the book, but in such a skillful way that you just keep going, enjoying every word on every page.

I love Lisa’s writing. Her books are always interesting and this one perhaps darker than others I have read, but all the more intriguing all the way to the end.

Again I applaud Lisa for her great skill in taking me on a journey I did not want to end.

Thank you to Lisa and TBC for sending this beautiful book to me in return for this honest opinion.

Really enjoyed this book. A man is found on a beach seemingly with no memory of how he came to be there. His story is revealed gradually as he tries to remember in present time and in alternate chapters a story set in the past is relayed. The two do not interweave until late in the book and you never quite feel that you've joined all the dots therefore it keeps you well and truly hooked right to the novel's conclusion. Throughout the book, the loyalty and love for family is explored through several different guises - it really does make you think. The characters were very relatable as they were flawed as we all are, Lisa Jewell always does a great job of making her characters 3 dimensional. A great read!

Reading the reviews, I thought, hmm Must buy. I've been a fan of Lisa since I read a beat up old copy of Ralph's Party that I found in a room I was renting. Read the next two books when they came out.

This story is cleverly put together and reaches its climax about 90 % through, with a gentle tying up after, of loose ends. Is it Romance, is it Thriller? Id say it was neither, Id say it was a good old fashioned story, that needed to be told. Maybe more of a Mystery thing. But then again Lisa likes to write about mysteries being solved. So in that sense its worth the money to buy it. I dont think you can categorise the genre that this book falls into apart from saying its fiction. And cleverly thought out fiction too. Certainly as I type this at 3 am, having started the book at 11.30 pm I obviously thought it was worth the insomnia.

I think I have read every one of her novels! I recall getting one of them in a magazine when I was younger and being hooked.
I loved curling up with this one and enjoyed the characters and their flaws (esp Alice).
Read it, it's fab :)

I’ve been reading Lisa Jewell books since Ralph’s Party (1999), and it’s been interesting to see her cover art transition from pastel, illustrated ‘chick lit’ (forgive the term) to more mature women’s fiction. Even more interesting is that I Found You was released in hardback last year with a women’s lit style cover (see the hardback edition at https://www.amazon.co.uk/I-Found-You-Lisa-Jewell/dp/1780893612/), but the newly released ebook and paperback versions have a cover that shouts ‘thriller’.

Is it a thriller? Is it women’s lit? The publisher leaves it to the reader to decide – but is evidently swaying toward thriller with the new cover.

I am not a fan of pigeon-holing a book, saying that it must be this or that, and what I really loved about I Found You is that the book is bigger than genre conventions, than attempts to write to formula. The book works as a story with heart, with likeable, true-to-life characters – but it also works as a gripping thriller that keeps you turning the pages (even long after you should have put the lights out and gone to sleep).

I admit it was the promise of mystery and thrill that attracted me to the book (thanks to the superbly crafted blurb), and the book certainly delivered. The backstory that slowly unfolds is dark and compelling, and the dual mysteries of who (who is the man on the beach, ‘Frank’?) and where (where has Alice’s husband gone?) kept me guessing for a good while. I was surprised to find that the author really had me convinced by her plot; usually, I am a little sceptical about stories relating to amnesia.
