Another excellent book from Patrick Holford, this deals with addictions - not just alcohol, drugs and nicotine - but sugar and caffeine too. All have major impacts on health and well-being and are difficult to give up without expert help. Using nutrition and providing the right nutrients and supplements, investigating allergies, stabilising blood sugar levels and addressing the psychological reasons for addiction the Brain Bio Clinic, founded by Holford, helps many people every year. This book is written for anyone who feels it is time to take control of their lives, rather than being run by their addictions and experiencing the mental and physical consequences. It isn't made out to be easy, but a detailed run down of how to approach each addiction gives an insight in how to change. There are plenty of resources, references and places to get help included as well. (BOOK OF THE MONTH, HEALTHYSOUL.CO.UK)

This book sets out, in some detail, many of the biochemical factors which may influence the way we feel. It suggests foods and supplements which may be beneficial for generating a sense of well-being. It is a very informative book and gives a useful account of the association between the various neurotransmitters (serotonin, dopamine, norepinephrine etc.) and mood.
Some parts of the book are more suitable for specialists with some knowledge of biochemistry than they are for the general reader. Some of the suggested regimes of supplements seem rather complicated (and possibly expensive).
I would have found the book even more impressive if it had suggested more practical means of improving our ordinary diet to produce the desired effects.
Instead, we find the following types of advice "When you are feeling anxious...take GABA, tryptophan, 5-HTP or taurine.", "When you...feel apathetic, take tyrosine.", "When you are feeling hypersensitive...take DL-phenylalanine"..."To offset cravings, take glutamine or GABA". For those who "...are sicker and feel more hopeless than others..." it is suggested that "intravenous nutrient therapy" is appropriate.
It is usually desirable for people who suffer from addictive disorders to get away from the idea that the solutions to all of their problems are to be found in the contents of more pills, potions and syringes. Nevertheless, a great deal of work has clearly gone into the production of this book and the information which it contains looks extremely useful.
That is when I got the distinct "snake oil" feeling which you will be familiar with if you are smoker searching for a way to quit.
My concerns are :
The fact that it isnt dealing with a method of how to quit more a method of reducing the cravings, which may sound picky but if you are going to crack an addiction there is a whole world of psycholigical triggers which need addressing as well as the physical. Which this book seems to shrug off with "what ever method you want to use to quit" hmmmmm but isn't that why I brought your selftitled S**t book?
The dosages of the vitamins/amino acids which seemed very high. Also because they were so high they are hard to source at a reasonable price (initial investigation was £150+ for a month) and then it seems that you are then required to take them on an ongoing basis? with no sort of guarantee that it will actually work.
Further assistance is constantly offered by plugging the authors website (which has a members area where you can ask questions if you pay!)
The final point was the most aggravating as the pescription had such high dosages that you would want to query it, you google it and find that it doesnt look good and you go to his site to find no FAQ just a join now (for spam) or pay (for members area)
Overall - The system may work but I will not be trying it on the basis that it appears to be a very elongated advert for the authors products. This book looks to be another way to try and cash in on the desperate and addicted.
This is an excellent book clearly explaining the nutritional deficits that result from addiction/habitual overuse of various substances including alcohol, nicotine, sugar, caffeine, sleeping pills, antidepressants, cannabis, stimulants such as amphetamines and cocaine, also heroin and painkillers, amongst others. It is these deficits that underlie the cravings which make it so hard to stop.
The nutritional supplements to correct this imbalance(different for different substances)are clearly laid out. As pointed out by a previous reviewer these may not be cheap - but then neither are many of the substances we get addicted to. Also if you are going to the trouble of taking nutritional supplements to rebalance the brain's chemistry it makes sense to use good quality supplements at the recommended dosage, for the specified period (approximately 3 months). It won't be for ever and it will give you the best chance of getting a healthy body, brain and life as they support you to make the changes that mean you can become free of your habit/addiction/dependency.
This approach has been used successfully in USA for over 20 years through various clinics. This book is now making the information widely available to anyone who is ready to start helping themself. This nutritional support can be used in conjunction with psychological therapies if necessary.
The book is also available as a CD set. Personally, I found the information easier to take in from the book as it is easier to dip in and out.
