About the Author

Born in Amsterdam in 1945, Erik Herbermann moved with his family to Johannesburg at an early age, and ten years later moved to Canada. His initial equestrian training was with Patricia Salt FBHS, who studied at the Spanish Riding School under Col. Hans Handler, Richard Wätjen and Oberbereiter Lindenbauer. Subsequently, Herbermann studied under the late celebrated master, Egon von Neindorff. Now residing in the USA, Erik Herbermann devotes much of his time to lecturing, teaching, and conducting clinics internationally. Besides having produced four editions of his perennial, best-selling classic Dressage Formula, of which he also narrated an audio version, he has written numerous articles for equestrian publications in the United States, Holland and Canada. This new volume, From the Horse s Mouth, is a welcome addition to Herbermann s insightful literature.

Top Customer Reviews

This revised edition of 'A Horseman's Notes' continues to be an indispensable companion to Herbermann's seminal book 'Dressage Formula'. Overall, it is a wonderfully inspiring and illuminating exposition of the philosophy and ethics of riding which is both beautifully written and an enjoyable and thought provoking read in its own right. However, it also offers the serious rider far more.

In this book, Herbermann guides the reader to a deeper understanding of how to synthesise good riding technicalities with the psychology of working with the horse's nature to create harmony. He discusses in detail how the rider can solve many of the common practical riding and training problems faced by us all whilst fostering the horse's willing participation. In doing so, he both inspires and challenges the reader to see riding as an avenue to personal self improvement. Finally, in a new section he carefully sets out and explains the correct progression from single track to two track work and the gymnastic value of riding in 'position' - it is arguably the clearest explanation yet written on this fundamental aspect of schooling.

This is an outstanding book on Classical riding which confirms Herbermann's reputation as a Master of his subject. It truly builds upon, and will therefore come to rank alongside, the celebrated classical works of Waldemar Seunig and Wilhelm Museler. Every rider will discover a new insight in it and all should enjoy having a copy of it on their shelves.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Addition to Any Horseman's Library 5 Jun. 2015

Like his other publications, Mr. Herbermann's thoughtful writings are packed with valuable insights that, when applied correctly, greatly aid the horseman in moving toward the goal of returning freedom to the horse under saddle. As one progresses in their understanding of the horse, ever greater layers of meaning can be gleaned from minute details found in nearly every sentence of his books. Although Mr. Herbermann's books can seem overwhelming to those who are new to classical horsemanship, novice riders can still glean useful ideas to help enhance their interactions with horses and jump-start their riding abilities. As a nearly 10-year, regular student of Mr. Herbermann, I can say that "From the Horse's Mouth" clearly brings out many of the points covered in my hours of lessons and provides as close of an experience to riding with Mr. Herbermann as is possible from a book. I would highly recommend this volume to anyone who desires to embark on the journey of self-improvement through striving to better understand and work in harmony with the nature of the horse.

Erik Herbermann is a wonderful writer and master clinician and, of course, rider. I have been privileged to attend several of his clinics and have learned so much. I highly recommend all his books, especially this one.
