From the Inside Flap

The complete, definitive and never-before-published catalogue of Hipgnosis, 'Vinyl * Album * Cover * Art' finally does justice to the work of the most important design collective in music history, which, according to Roddy Bogawa, director of the documentary 'Taken by Storm' (2011), 'designed half your record collection'.

Founded in 1967 by Storm Thorgerson, Aubrey 'Po' Powell and Peter Christopherson, Hipgnosis gained legendary status in graphic design, transforming the look of album art forever and winning five Grammy nominations for package design.

Their revolutionary cover art moved away from the conventional group shots favoured by record companies of the day, resulting in the ground-breaking, often surreal designs which define the albums of many of the biggest names in the history of popular music: 10cc, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Peter Gabriel, The Police, Genesis, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Paul McCartney, Robert Plant, Syd Barrett, Throbbing Gristle, T. Rex, Wings, Yes and XTC, to name but a few.

Arranged chronologically, 'Vinyl * Album * Cover * Art' features stunning reproductions of every single Hipgnosis cover - 372 in total - coupled with detailed information by Po and Storm Thorgerson on the artworks and the compelling stories behind their creation. Additional contributions by Peter Gabriel, Marcus Bradbury, and Pentagram's Harry Pearce provide engrossing insights into the way these incredible artworks came into being; place the covers in context; and reflect on their enduring impact on album design.

A highly accessible stand-alone volume, 'Vinyl * Album * Cover * Art' will also make the perfect pop partner to the groundbreaking 'Hipgnosis | Portraits' (2014) with its rare revelations and behind-the-scenes photography.

A book illustrating the complete works of Hipnosis would have many salivating at the very prospect; not just record collectors but also art lovers - and, at last, here we have it. But was it worth the wait? Well, we do get the complete Hipgnosis catalogue over 324 pages - and all your favourites are here, along with many you may not have seen - complete with an introduction by Hypgnosis supremo Aubrey Powell and a forward by Peter Gabriel..
So what's not to love about this long-awaited tome....
The size of the book here is the main issue. The book itself is only 9.75" (or just under) x 8.25", so it's hardly a coffee table sized book (when I received it, I thought I'd been given a test-pressing, so disappointed was I by the size) and I suppose that this is reflective of the price. Consequently, due to the size, this therefore reflects the size of the album covers contained therein - many which measure a paltry 2.5" x 2.5". For a book designed to celebrate the art of this ground-breaking company, the size of some of these re-printed covers completely defeats the object - if people thought that the advent of the cd spelt the end of the art of album covers, you're not going to get much help trying to appreciate the art in this book with these sized pictures. Similarly, the text that accompanies these sleeves is absolutely tiny. Being that those who grew up with Hipgnosis will now be of a "certain age" (myself included) and will have been looking forward to this book, chances are, their reading glasses / a magnifier will be essential.
There's other things as well.

Oh yes - very happy with this! Written by someone so well acquainted with the music scene of the late 60s and 70s, this has fascinating insights and background stories to so many albums and their covers; many I know and many more, I don't. The author is very honest about the hits and the misses and goes to into enough detail about the techniques used 'back in the day' without being a bore. I would have liked the pictures to have been a little bigger (the originals were 12", of course!) but the book would have become unwieldy; as it is, it is the perfect size to thumb through in a chair. The pages are of thick, quality paper and it's nicely bound; the quality of the whole production reflects the excellence of its subject matter.

First class - very pleased.

Well written, well designed, well realised. A rollercoaster ride though the sixties and seventies before computers made creativity redundant. My only complaint - Steve Hackett's departure from Genesis is twice confused with Peter Gabriel's in the text. A small nitpick for an essential companion to any vinyl collection of the time.
