Psychological thrillers don't come much better than this (Clare Mackintosh)

Totally unputdownable - until I got to the twist that made me drop the book (Erin Kelly)

Taut and twisty, and full of surprises. I loved it (Sarah Hilary)

Nothing is what it seems in this brilliant novel by Julia Crouch. What a clever, unsettling, absorbing book (Elly Griffiths)

A fantastic, fast-paced and riveting read. Her Husband's Lover is addictive, dark and disturbing. I struggled to put it down and it stayed with me long after I'd finished the book. (Lisa Cutts)

Deliciously disturbing... Crouch is one of those writers who inevitably keeps one up too late, and Her Husband's Lover is no exception (Alex Marwood)

A brilliant and compelling thriller from the Queen of Domestic Noir (Helen FitzGerald)

A perfect mix of intriguing characters and unexpected surprises, compelling because the ground beneath our feet is constantly shifting... she makes her readers think (Ruth Dugdall)

Compellingly unsettling, Julia has crafted a top notch twisty tale that'll keep you turning those pages desperate to find out what happens next! (Angela Clarke)

Takes Domestic Noir into even darker and more twisted places than ever (Helen Cadbury)

A deliciously dark psychological thriller (Best Magazine)

A gripping thriller penned by a brilliant writer (Peterborough Telegraph)

Hugely addictive read... gleefully rips to shreds the reader's expectations (Irish Times)

Your husband is dead, your children too just where do you start to try to build your life up? Yes ok the blurb really did it for me, it sounded like a read I would enjoy some dark moments but also some clever twisted mind games too.
Louisa is left wondering lots of whys and how's and just why with a woman like Sam her husband had taken up with. It had me riveted to the spot reading this. Just as you think it will be heading one way of which I was so sure of it suddenly vered off another way. My mind was kept guessing and the twisty way it gets you thinking one thing then another was a brilliant idea I thought. This has to be one of my most favourite reads this year so far and did help with the bed rest I was on too.

This book absolutely blew my mind! Poor Louisa, the victim of an abusive husband has really been through the mill. After years of abuse and control in a loveless marriage, she finally escapes Sam when a car chase claims the lives of her husband and her children. Only Louisa survives and after months in a coma, and six months of intensive physiotherapy and psychotherapy, she is ready to start living again. The inquest rules Sam’s death “Death by Misadventure” despite his lover Sophie’s ridiculous declarations and protestations that somehow, it was all Louise’s fault. Sam wouldn’t hurt a fly according to Sophie, even though new evidence has proven he murdered his first wife Katie. Obsessed and pregnant Sophie can not accept this portrayal of Sam, as she claims she saw a different side to the womaniser. Depressed and alone, Sophie makes it her goal to ruin Louisa’s life, and take back what she feels she is owed – Sam’s money.

I finished reading this book last night and my heart is still racing this morning! This is one of the darkest, twisted tales I have read in a long time and I absolutely loved it. From the start I was totally absorbed in this book. Julia Crouch is a fantastic writer who really messed with my head with her characters, and messed with my emotions. The story is told from mainly two points of view, Louisa and Sophie, but is also split into flashback narrative, between present day and during Louisa and Sam’s marriage. This meant the story was unraveled slowly, but built up suspense and tension well. Going between the present and the past with Louisa and Sophie, the author paints two very different pictures with chilling repercussions.

Her Husband's Lover is a measured yet chillingly paced novel, full of twists and turns that will have you screwed up beyond belief by the time you have finished. No clear-cut or easy answers are provided here - you will be helplessly hurtled into a black hole that will leave you lurching from one clue to another as you try to make sense of it all!

Dark and twisted is the only way to describe the plot of Her Husband's lover - we start with the car crash and Louisa lying in a coma in hospital, her husband Sam and their children gone. Enter Sophie determined to avenge her lover's death - determined to make Louisa pay for what she believes she is owed and from there on in we are embroiled into what is undoubtedly one of the most chilling domestic noir novels of the year - seriously the author takes noir to a whole new level!

Sophie and Louisa narrate this tale and OMG what unreliable narrators they are! With the story told from both their points of view the reader will be reeling between despising and feeling sorry for both of them! Julia Crouch has excelled herself with the development of the characters in this book - they will manipulate you and play mind games with your brain, seriously you are not going to know who or what to believe throughout this book!

The novel gives you abuse, betrayal and deception all tied up into one mind-blowing plot. The reader is the mouse and Julia Crouch is the cat toying with your mind - this book left me on the edge of my seat and I literally could not put it down

This novel starts off in the way it continues until the very last word; dramatic, intense, confusing and with a unnerving sense of threat from something unknown.

It opens with a terrible and devastating car crash – which could be a good metaphor for the entire book as this is a messy, complicated, confusing story, full of moments that completely change your thoughts and feelings towards the characters.

The opening scene of Louisa escaping her battered car which was chased off the road by her husband Sam is very real and emotionally intense.

“Where is he though? Are they still in danger?”

Louisa’s panic about Sam overrides everything else around her and this immediately unleashes a torrent of questions from the reader about what has happened, why she was trying to escape and what has Sam done to propel them into this desperate situation. The added horror that both her children have died in the accident makes this an opening that can only hook the reader in and drag them quickly only on a journey that will keep them balancing on the edge of their seat, wishing the sofa had a seatbelt to keep them tightly in place as the twists, turns, emergency stops and law breaking speed of the story hurtle them along on a ride that can only leave you feeling distinctly nauseous.

So Crouch continues to set the scene. Louise is recovering and they tell her she is “lucky”, but she feels anything but. Crouch evokes a heavy atmosphere of fear which will keep you checking over your shoulder as she builds more and more tension with hints that Louisa’s life is still at stake; that her marriage and family life have been hellish. The anonymous nature of the voice and the threat create even more suspense and tension.
