Review

"Really great suspense novel. Kept me up most of the night. The alcoholic narrator is dead perfect." (STEPHEN KING)

"The thriller scene will have to up its game if it's to match Hawkins this year" (Observer)

"A complex and increasingly chilling tale courtesy of a number of first-person narratives that will wrong-foot even the most experienced of crime fiction readers" (Irish Times)

"achieves a sinister poetry . . . Hawkins keeps the nastiest twist for last" (Financial Times)

"Hawkins' masterful deployment of unwittingly unreliable narration to evoke the aftershocks of abuse and trauma is a powerful way of exploring women's marginalization" (Huffington Post)

I think I missed the train somehow with this book. Perhaps I let the hype get to me - Britain's biggest selling book of 2015 - or perhaps it's more chick lit than gripping yarn. I didn't find the story held me to the extent it was difficult to put down. The concept is fairly novel but the character development was lacking, in fact I found the repetition tiresome at times - Rachel's alcoholism, Megan's infidelity et al. Concerning the former, it's a myth that an alcoholic can't remember anything they did or said, but this novel hinges on that. I spotted the murderer a mile from the dénouement, which didn't help my enjoyment at all.

If you live in South London or even west London and commute by train into town you'll be looking into peoples' back yards every day. To be honest I never saw anyone's life unfolding from this view from a train in all the years of commuting. But our heroine does and it creates a life changing string of events that maintains a high level of angst and distress for her on a day to day basis that freaks out her imagination - sometimes with just cause - regarding old flames, cheaters, adulterers, wicked women and dodgy mind doctors. It's hard to feel any sympathy for the heroine - she's a major moaning minnie that cannot get over life's losses - boozes non-stop and free loads off a girl friend when she loses the home she shared with her wayward partner. She's not adverse to kidnapping her rival's baby and still thinks her ex has desires for her ramshackle persona and less than svelte body. She suffers from persistent memory loss which makes it hard for her to unravel contemporary events and hopelessly confuses past, present and imagined futures. Ultimately a victim of her own woes churned with the avarice and the vice of others - but she kind of pulls through her travails via a whole heap of punishment that is not entirely her just dues. I wouldn't want to strike up a conversation with her on the 08:05 into Waterloo but this is a well thought through good read for your own commute.

I couldn't wait to read this book, after all the hype about it I was excited and really looking forward to reading it. At first I was disappointed because it wasn't what I expected and I began to get bored with it. But then it got better and things started to happen, the tension built and I couldn't read fast enough! An amazing story with a few twists, you'll find yourself guessing throughout. I loved it and now I'm looking forward to watching the movie!

This book was brilliant from start to finish. It took a while to get used to going back and forward between the different characters telling their stories, but I was hooked right from the first page, the writing is brilliant and really captures your attention, I couldn't put it down, it took me just over a day to read it. The characters were totally believable and I got quite drawn into Rachel's daily train trips to and from London, almost felt like I was taking the journey myself. The ending was totally unexpected and I was shocked when I realised who was actually responsible for the events that happened throughout the book. This book is well worth the 5 stars I've given it. Definitely recommended, a fabulous read.

Definitely not my kind of book. I'm just amazed I managed to stay the course and get it finished. How it made the top of the best seller charts for all those weeks is a mystery to me.

Really disappointed. This book intrigued me as I had heard so much about it. I really wish that I hadn't bothered to buy it :( The characters were not pleasant and it was hard to feel any positivity for them. It kept jumping from one character's narrative to another and was really boring. I read it to the end to see if it got better, it didn't sadly. It ended on a " oh, right ok" rather than an "oh wow, I didn't see that coming" If you read this book, I hope you enjoy it more that I did :(
