I was super keen on reading this, but got very disappointed. Good idea, horrible execution. Complete waste of time. It is just a series of random essays by people who are working in fintech or are interested in FinTech. Read some online blogs and save your money.

Financial Technology has, for the last twenty years or so, been very slow moving and sclerotic; it's largely been formed by monolithic in-house systems that require huge amounts of support staff and developers, and of course a similar amount of effort put into integration with all the other monolithic in-house systems. That's now starting to change. It was slow at first, but it's really starting to accelerate due to one thing - lowered costs.

In a post-Brexit atmosphere banks are literally doing anything they can to cut down costs, and the idea of pulling in an external system for a reasonable price - and consequently being able to lay off a huge amount of expensive software developers - is too compelling to turn down. As a result, a generation of software developers are soon going to be out of work (or at least will need to find other jobs) and a more agile and younger set of developers are taking over. This book gives you a good insight into what that younger generation of developers are doing, how they are consolidating financial technology solutions across the industry, and how their innovations are even starting to disrupt the industry itself. A good example is the case of block chain, and so-called crypto-currencies. Having said that, it could be said that the book's biggest downfall is in it's shallowness; it's purely an introduction, a series of articles about different aspects of the current state of fintech, offered from a number of different sources. Certainly it didn't tell me anything I didn't know, partly because it didn't go into enough detail; also, because of the format - a set of submitted essays from a variety of different sources - it doesn't have a strong narrative through-line.

So in summary, for me I can't say it really told me anything new.

This isn't really a coherent book on the fintech landscape. Instead, this is a collection of essays which have been grouped into subjects. Because each essay stands on its own rather than being written as a part of a larger piece there is a tendency for similar details to surface multiple times. Each author writes a short piece on their own particular area, whether it's challenger banks or the fintech environment in one country or another. All of these provide either a brief overview of one piece or a small section of detail without a full overview to fit it in. As a result a book by a single author would have been more useful and interesting as it would have provided a more coherent outline of the fintech landscape, and would have both provided more depth and less repetition. I hoped that having authors who are working in fintech companies would make this useful, but it would have been better if each author wrote a full chapter, rather than each chapter being a series of short essays.

If this book is so great, why create 21 fake 5-star reviews? None of them are verified purchases and each "reviewer" has only ever done ONE review - this book! Each so-called "review" is one single line/sentence. All 21 reviews are dated April 1st, 2016. Since the book's author and/or publisher have so little faith in the book - why would anyone buy it? Disgusting!

This is quite a reasonable selection of articles on various topics surrounding financial technology. I am a professional software developer who has had to spend decades creating applications in offshore private banks to fill holes left behind by off-the-shelf products. I am now interested in creating my own systems and incorporating some modern artificial intelligence techniques, which is my core area of original expertise. This book has helped to fuel my insight into what's happening in the World and whilst I now understand there is considerable room for my ideas, my next challenge is finding the time to implement them!

The book is a collection of very short articles written by different authors(2-4 pages each) on different applications of fintech. Overall it is all very basic and it is way too fragmented.

This appears to be the first detailed review of this book, so I'll try to do it justice and give a balanced opinion of its contents.

Firstly, the editors of this book state proudly that this is the first globally crowdsourced book on Fintech out there. With more than 160 authors submitting work to be included in this book, just under half were selected for inclusion. They represent startups, SMEs, large corporates, agencies and NGOs, coming from 20 countries and each giving their own personal insights into their particular areas of interest and expertise in the world of FinTech. Each contribution is a few pages each, about the length of a reasonable blog post, and is both written and could be considered as a stand alone piece. I learnt something from each contribution, and found each piece in it self well written and thought through. Some of the original authors had maybe a little dryer writing style, others leaning more towards speculation and hyperbole, but the overall standard is high and well referenced for those looking to do further research and delving deeper into the world of FinTech

Each article from each contributor is grouped with similar pieces to form the 9 chapters of the book. These are:

(1. Introduction)
2. FinTech Themes
3. FinTech Hubs
4. Emerging Markets and Social Impact
5. FinTech Solutions
6. Capital and Investment
7. Enterprise Innovation
8. More Success Stories
9. Crypto-currencies and Blockchains
10. The Future of Fintech

Personally, I would have like to have seen more on both Identity and Blockchains, with chapter 9 being by far the shortest section of the book with only 2 contributions.
