Product Description

About the Author

Alex Hallatt was born and brought up in the West Country in England. She emigrated to New Zealand, where she met her partner, Duncan and his dog, Billie. They spent a few years living in Australia, England & Spain and, at time of writing, are heading back to New Zealand, where Alex hopes to plant a garden, Duncan plans to do a lot more fishing and Billie plans to avoid having to go in the cargo hold of a plane ever again. Alex was bullied at school, but found her friends and is now happy to be following the first three rules of FAB Club (though she is breaking Rule Number 6 a lot).

Format: Paperback
Creative, fun and inspiring children's book about standing up to bullies and forming new friendships. This book has humour, a suspenseful plot and teaches kids how to solve problems together. There are interesting and educational references along the way from Egyptian mythology to high tech. The British/Kiwi author includes a glossary at the back for colloquial terms that may not be familiar to North Americans. I especially love the illustrations and would love to see an animated version of the book!

My son loved reading this book - at the end of each chapter, he couldn't wait to find out what happened next. Alex Hallat's characters are immediately engaging, and her now famous style is visually appealing. The story had a nice blend of humour and an important message about bullying. We would like to thank the author for showing that everyone is different, and that it's OK to be 'you' and stick up for yourself and your friends. I think this book has something for everyone.

I gave this book to my 11 year old granddaughter to review and her comment was simply "It's great!" I agree. As American users of the English language, she and I also appreciated the dictionary and the author's personal comments. My older daughter is the principle of an elementary school with 800 children. We think FAB Club would be a great 'short read' project that could open up a school wide discussion on bullying.

With a light touch, strong characters and great illustrations this book raises the topic of bullying in a way bound to engage children - and their parents.
There is a clear message that bullying can be brought into the open and confronted, along with a list of on- line resources.
It should be on every school library's book shelf, but there might need to be several copies
