Dodge and Burn
Seraphina Madsen

This book is a beautifully crafted psychedelic road trip written by the new novelist Seraphina Madsen, published by the independent UK Publishing company DoDo Ink who are renowned for daring and difficult fiction.

When reading the book, you will find it crosses over many genres and instantly it struck me as being reminiscent of the crazy heights of the late great Hunter S Thompson’s ‘Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas’, mixed with the strong female sass of a Sigourney Weaver from ‘Aliens’ and the dark fairy tale storytelling found in the great Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’.

The story at its core is a novel about missing sister heiress’ Eugenie and Camille Lund who we are lead to have been kidnapped by the villainous character Dr. Vargas who for me was one of the stand out characters in this novel. The back story (told in diary form) is full of many misleading coincidences which lead to their mother being killed by killer bees in Mexico as they were attracted to the smell of her perfume. Coincidence or not? But either way they are under Dr. Vargas’ care for the near future, if you can call torcher and conditioning care?

During all this the sisters immerse themselves into the supernatural spiritual world so expertly crafted by Seraphina that you can’t help but being drawn into a world full of omens, rituals, potions, mothmen, cabins in the woods, drug addled raves and more suspicious and shifty looking characters than you would find at your nearest A&E on a Friday night!
