Review

"Zippy, smart." New York (magazine)"

"Zippy, smart."--New York (magazine)

"Readers of this compelling history will appreciate the sweat behind every joke."--Washington Post

"Mr. Smith's book feels like a visit to a distant time."--New York Times

"[A] substantial, many-faceted oral history....This superbly well-edited choral work illuminates the enormous effort, creativity, collaboration, and hustle required for producing a hilarious, news-focused, four-times-a-week comedy show and the chutzpah necessary for taking on the powers-that-be."--Booklist

"Sometimes our book dreams get answered....If you ever longed to be in the room for epic moments like Stewart's post-9/11 on-air address, his grudge matches with Fox News, the famous Indecision presidential election coverage and more, this is your printed word moment of zen.--Detroit Free Press

"Deftly recount[s] the way Stewart's sensibilities, political realities (and unrealities), defining events like 9/11, advances in technology and changes in the television news landscape moved the show from spectator to player."--USA Today

"Smith digs deep into the show's ascendance and cultural influence as if he was one of the show's meticulous fact-checking news-tape researchers...Smith lets the show's stars, crew, and guests tell the show's unvarnished history. Fortunately, most every one interviewed-from Stephen Colbert to longtime showrunner Ben Karlin to Sen. John McCain-possesses an A-plus wit...it doesn't flinch from digging into the show's most contentious moments... in the Age of Trump, the time has never been better to delve into the minds of the masters who became a vital part of our democracy."--Entertainment Weekly

"Smith gives readers sound bites from some smart, funny and self-aware people waxing rhapsodic about their 'let's put on a show' adventures...the seeming candor of Stewart in particular gives the book a refreshing amount of depth, particularly regarding backstage drama...the real measure of the show and the book that bears its name is, did it have a point, and, moreso, was it funny in making it. The answer, on both counts, is a resounding, laugh-out-loud 'yes.'"--Chicago Tribune

"Comedy Central's The Daily Show was a cultural phenomenon, and now it gets the oral history it deserves...Smith tells the show's story through artfully arranged first-person recollections. ..it is more than a collection of famous moments, but rather a work of distinctive, original social commentary."--The National Book Review

"There is solace in this chatty and highly informative tome....THE DAILY SHOW (THE BOOK) is like eating popcorn, in that it's light and fun and easy to consume....the book is a love letter to the people that built The Daily Show and make it work night after night."--Vulture

"Lively... Smith deftly combines narrative with the recollections of people involved with the show at every level, ranging from boldface names like John McCain to correspondents like Stephen Colbert and Ed Helms....An intimate and entertaining look at a fake-news program whose caustic, witty alchemy remains missed by many."--Kirkus Reviews

"A must-read for the show's fans and those aspiring to a career in comedy or television."--Library Journal

"Wonderfully compiled...Certainly if you are a fan of the show you must read THE DAILY SHOW (THE BOOK)...it is a sincere blast to relive its finest moments and understand how it was achieved and more importantly remember how much it was a major part of the democratic process...Bravo, Mr. Smith."--Reality Check News & Information Desk

"Stewart even contributed the introduction. But this isn't a sanitized history. There's plenty of warts and all (and some fun hijinks as well). It's also a smart look at the business of TV and how 24-hour news channels and the rise of conservative media have changed our political culture."--Hollywood Reporter

Great book which opens a world behind the scenes of a show which challenged the politics and media coverage of the media through highs and lows. Some incredible insights into those off screen including writers, producers and members of the crew. The audiobook version is a little disappointing in that it is voiced by actors rather than using audio from our beloved contributors and politicians - those voices that we know so well.

Features a series of interspersed interviews about the creation of the show and how Stewart became a part of the show. At times boilerplate, occasionally funny. Much of the talent went on to network stardom.

5.0 out of 5 stars Such a great book for an equally great show 18 Dec. 2016
By Robert Hayes - Published on Amazon.com

Say what you will about fiction, but I'll choose memoirs over novels any day of the week. Even though I don't have cable, I have been religiously watching Daily Show clips for years now. So, the prospect of combining the those two things made my mouth water. Now having just finished it, it delivered pretty much everything I was expecting: basically, all of the "behind the scenes" stuff you don't see. I also found the treatment of Craig Killborn's years to be interesting. Surprisingly, there wasn't as much drama as I thought there would be, but honestly that's a good thing. What really comes through is how much like a family they were/are, and how devoted they've become to exposing b.s., no matter the source. It's truly amazing. As for the style of the book, it plays out like a talking-head documentary. A little bit different, but the narrative still unfolds coherently. So, if you're a fan of the show, getting this book is a no-brainer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very much enjoyed this book 23 Nov. 2016

Very much enjoyed this book! Read it so fast, I devoured it. Fans of the show will find this to be a fantastic trip down memory lane, while other, more critical readers will delight in learning the innerworkings and labored diligence from everyone involved that made The Daily Show with Jon Stewart come off effortlessly every night for 16 years. There were many laugh out loud moments, and yet I can sense the painstaking struggle that took place behind the scenes to make the show as true to the intentions in which it ultimately evolved. This book portrays the popular show as its own life force that organically manifested into the consummation warranting critical acclaim, all the awards and accolades, and as Jon says about his early trials and tribulations, the same is true of the indelible impact The Daily Show with Jon Stewart ultimately has on America,"Yeah. That will leave a mark."

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolute Must Read for Stewart fans 2 Dec. 2016

Written in a unique conversational way, the book provides innumerable glimpses into the show and the cast of characters. More importantly, it offers insight into the powerful morals and ethics that drove Jon's decision making through the years. I was a faithful viewer and of course desperately missed him during this fateful election. Like all brilliant people, Stewart made it look so easy and light and joyful, and I enjoyed every single show. I now understand how much thought went into the content and how dedicated he was to continued evolution for the creative process. And while Stewart is honest about the demands on his time, his gratitude for the opportunity shines through as a lovely beacon of light. I always viewed him as the most influential voice of the digital age - I now view him as the Michelangelo of our century. Read it!

Loved this book! I love that Jon Stewart not only provides a lot of information in the book but that it interviews everyone from current and previous correspondents to writers and producers of the show.
The book delves pretty deep from the beginning of the show to the end with some juicy bits in between. I'm a huge fan of the show and am of this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Look Into TDS Through First Hand Accounts of its Staff 17 Dec. 2016
By rlisu - Published on Amazon.com

As a big fan of the Daily Show I enjoyed this book very much.

It's not an all encompassing history of The Daily Show(TDS), but there is enough good information and anecdotes about the show to leave the reader satisfied. Because it's mainly based on interviews with the creators, staff and stars of TDS, past and present, the books shows a lot of different perspectives on the show. The many voices help fill the gaps of knowledge about how the show is run and about Jon Stewart who of course is the other focal point of the book. I would not mind reading a definitive history of the show to get even more information, but I enjoyed the style of this book because of those distinctive voices. There is something raw and honest (if not always truthful because of our faulty memory) about first hand accounts. The people in this book are too numerous to list (there are short bios of them all on the back of the book), but they range from the creators, executive producers, correspondents, writers, producers, to even CC execs. Chris Smith's work was mainly editorial, he interposes his narrative every few pages, to move us from one episode of the story to another. That makes the book a very quick read.

The book covers Jon's arrival TDS to Trevor Noah taking over. We get a glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes and see how the show comes together. We see just how much hard work goes into making a short 22 minute episode. The book takes us through the evolution of the show, from what begun as an irreverent take on local news, to the scathing critique and satire of mainstream media and our politics. We get to see how TDS became a national institution (as much as one show can become on today). The voices of this oral history are diverse, even if this is not an objective history and critique of the show. But an an insiders look, it works great.

Loved the book, and would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of TDS or any of its protagonists.
