Product description

Review

Writing with wit, spontaneity and moral courage... Under the bile and bluster, the egotism and regret, the artful insouciance of his prose lies a dear (and irreverent) love of comrades and an even dearer (and endearing) love of his wife. --The Times

'My favorite book of 2013, one of my favorite books ever written, is Simon Gray's The Complete Smoking Diaries, a post-post-postmodern In Search of Lost Time: rigorously/relentlessly self-mocking and self-scrutinizing, all while pretending to be just out on a lark... Unbelievably beautiful, unbelievably great, utterly loneliness-assuaging' --'Books of 2013', Salon

'These are not conventional diaries but a wonderful interweaving of memories, events and anecdotes, fuelled by nicotine and his irresistible taste for black comedy' --'Best Books' chosen by Lynn Barber, The Week

About the Author

SIMON GRAY was born in England in 1936 and was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge. He was the author of over 30 plays, including Butley, The Common Pursuit and Cell Mates, and published several volumes of diaries and books about the theatre, including Enter a Fox and Fat Chance, both published by Granta. He was awarded a CBE in 2005 and died in 2008.

Format: Hardcover
This is a terrifically well written and interesting read from Simon Gray at the end of his life. I laughed out loud quite a lot. A stream of consciousness approach often annoys me, but this certainly did not. The book is perfectly presented - I didn't find a single error.

Enter the world of Simon Gray, irascible in his closing years but always articulate and interesting. All four books of diaries in one volume is tremendous value. Perhaps the writing tics that are so compulsive in a single book become a little wearing in the longer read? Otherwise, a fine piece of work that will surely last.

An extraordinary book, an extraordinary man, I strongly recommend this volume; it's not often you find a writer who, paragraph after paragraph, prompts you to read his work out loud to anyone in your vicinity.
