The Ghost Train
We have a well used copy in school and the children are continually borrowing it out of the library. At the moment my children (Y1) are taking it in turns to borrow it. We have used it in our literacy lessons and I am amazed at how much response I get from the children. It has developed their reading skills and knowledge of different text. When we discuss the 'ride' the children are electrified by the sheer horror of it. They have come up with some fabulous alternate 'haunts'e.g. 'haunted house with headless zombies'. For the first time the children are not stuck for something to say. When given the writing task 'Come for a ride on our ghost train' and asked to use their imagination; they have produced some brilliant work. Our next task will be to create our own 'big book'. I am sure we will not be short of great ideas for the 'spooky' journey. This book has also been a great springboard for 'art'- drawing our own passengers for the ghost train. 'Maths' - counting, number bonds. The Children do not tire of reading this book. They like to read it to each other. If you like children's books then this one is a definite must, for children 4 years to 99 years.

As another reviewer says, it doesn't have a proper story and is designed for very young children. Nevertheless my family had a lot of fun with it. The pictures are spooky - more silly than genuinely terrifying. To give an idea of the words I have copied half the book below. If it sounds feeble I can say that it gives fantastic scope for reading with silly voices and the children loved it. The best testament is that my copy is held together with sellotape.

Come for a ride on the ghost train
In the dark tunnel you will
scream!
Over the loathsome pit you will
Shriek!
Out in the slimy swamp you will
Squeal!
Deep in the scary forest you will
Hhowl!

I purchased this for my children after reading the excellent 'Spooky Street' by the same authors which my children adore. I was fed up reading it night after night and wanted a change! My local library didnt have this book, it's quite old, so I bought this book blind without knowing what it was like. I expected it to be similar but it was actually very disappointing, whereas 'Spooky Street' has a story and can be read by an older child, this book has only a few words on each page, it appears to be for a much younger child. The book is brilliantly illustrated, my children love the pictures but it isn't what I expected.
