Praise for FAT CHANCE
"No scientist has done more in the last fifty years to alert Americans to the potential dangers of sugar in the diet than Dr. Robert Lustig."
--Gary Taubes, author of "Good Calories, Bad Calories" and "Why We Get Fat"

"Our eating habits are killing us. In this timely and important book, Dr. Robert Lustig presents the scientific evidence for the toxicity of sugar and the disastrous effects of modern industrial food on the hormones that control hunger, satiety, and weight. He gives recommendations for a personal solution to the problem we face and also suggests a public policy solution. "Fat Chance" is the best book I've read on the relationship between diet and health and the clearest explanation of epidemic obesity in our society."
--Andrew Weil, M.D., author of "Spontaneous Happiness" and "You Can't Afford to Get Sick"

""Fat Chance "is THE manifesto for our time. It reveals the real reasons we why we are a fat nation and how to cure the obesity epidemic. It gets right to the root of the problem, which is not gluttony and sloth, as the food industry, government and your neighbor would have you believe. It is because we are drowning in a sea of sugar which poisons our metabolism, shrinks our brains, and threatens our national security and global competitiveness. Every American, politician, teacher, and business leader must read this book. Our nation's future depends on it."
--Mark Hyman, M.D., author of "The Blood Sugar Solution"

I really like this book, it's one of my most used now. It doesn't have any pictures which is a bit off putting at first but it does have great, tried and tested recipes. All of the recipes are simple and a number I use in different ways, for example the marinara sauce can be made in bulk and used in pasta dishes, soups, as a sauce for fish or chicken. The ricotta and spinach sauce is another easy recipe that is great for meat free days. The granola is delicious and I'll never buy breakfast cereal from the supermarket again. The book has given me loads of inspiration for making simple, unprocessed food but what I like most about it is that it's realistic for sugar addicts who don't like to go hungry - the meals are satisfying and there are a handful of recipes for desserts which Lustig stresses should be an occasional treat. The book doesn't put too much emphasis on losing weight and focuses more on eating quality, unprocessed food (with the byproduct being weight loss) for health gains. As with most American recipe books, the temperatures and measurements, some food names, haven't been translated for British cooks. The ingredients are easily available in most supermarkets.

I saw the YouTube video by Robert Lustig and wanted more info and ended up buying this book. So glad I did. This gives an explanation of Robert's ideas on reducing refined carbohydrates and lots of info on the way of eating that he and the recipe's author Cindy follow. The premise is easy to follow: half your plate vegetables, a quarter protein, a quarter carbohydrate/dairy. I've been following this for a couple of months and have lots 10lbs without trying. I'm never hungry, not counting calories/points/units etc, yet I'm feeling better and losing weight. I've tried a couple of the recipes as written and adapted other favourites following the principles. Highly recommended :)

If you need to learn how to roast a tomato, make an "almost home-made salsa" (using some store-bought salsa and adding some vegetables and a squeeze of lemon), how to roast a chicken or some vegetables, how to store or cook rice then this could be just the book for you. BUT if you already have almost any cook book that you like and enjoy using, then you probably don't need or want this one. Instead, I could recommend 'A Change of Appetite' by Diana Henry - bought about the same time and it's inspiring!

Aside from converting American measurements and many of the ingredients being hard to source in the UK this was a great buy, and was read alongside his other book Fat Chance. Simple but well thought out and effective recipes, you can't go wrong with this.
