A Very useful addition to any diesel enthusiasts bookshelf. The book draws together information published elsewhere over the years but makes for a much easier single point of reference. After the main specification panel for each locomotive class plus a couple of photos there are sub headings which cover subjects like Train Heating equipment, Headcode Panels, Headlights, External modifications, Detailed differences within a single class, Liveries carried, Emblems Carried, Depot Plaques Carried and finally Numbers and Names. I found the section on liveries carried to be the most useful as this information although printed in Spotters combined volumes over the years and other society publications is all here "Under one roof" so to speak. For example it's easy to see which class 47's carried Inter City Swallow livery or those that were adorned with Stratford Sparrows for example.

In an ever evolving mainline railway the book will gradually go out of date so a revised edition in say 5 years would be most useful. My only slight disappointment would be the picture quality of photos used but that might be down to the printing or over cropping. However seeing as its primarily a facts and figures book this does not detract from its overall value.

This book has a large amount of data regarding each class of locomotive, along with numerous pictures in different deliveries. Differences between locomotives within the same class are highlighted so that accurate detail can be applied by the modeller. I was a bit disappointed to find that not much was written about each class with regard to its operational history or the type of trains hauled. Therefore this is more of a reference work, which in the kindle format may actually be harder to use than a paper version which can be flicked through quickly to find the item that you are looking for.

I would give this book 4/5.

This is a very good book. That has the potential to be the definitive guide in future years. There are quite a few small detail errors. Which hopefully should be cleared up should the book be reprinted.

I like the authors work. As I also subscribe to a magazine that he edits.

He is very brave to attempt a book of this style. As it is a minefield to get right first time. Great effort though.

Some classes have been omitted colas class 70s otherwise a very informative and well written book worth purchasing for the historical value different liveries carried by classes of locomotives over the years.
