Review

"What I loved about this book is that there’s no namby pamby fluffy stuff. It’s real practical business advice with simple ideas that you can put into action. ?Through telling his own story Nigel cuts to the chase and challenges your thinking as a business owner and helps you focus on the right things. I not only learnt loads–I enjoyed it too." (David Gough, Broyce Control, Wolverhampton)

"The “Botty Rules is like an entire Business School in one volume. Real practical advice from someone who has been there and done it. I learnt soooooooooo much. It was a kick up the ass as well!" (David Costa, Flowers Unlimited, Brighton)

"If you’re in business you’d be stupid not to read “The Botty Rules”. It’s inspirational, educational and bloody useful. Loved it." (David Robinson, Up the Garden Path, Lichfield)

With the grinning rictus of a man surprised from behind by a sausage and the narcissistic self-absorption of a "thought leader" Nigel Botterill is going to be a marmite proposition for readers. Group A is going to love his tale of success based on hard work despite the occasional failure, his business skill of building franchises that give the hard working new businessperson a chance to flower early and for his team based approach to work. Group B is going to loathe his tale of wonderfulness (despite just that sprinkling of failure as the odd scheme goes west), his penchant for making money via franchises (for many the triumph of hope over experience), and his Bossy (rather than Botty) Rules for staff. The problem is that both groups are pretty much spot on.

Extracting the line of American self-help dogma (which the Bottster translates reasonably well into English) there are some good messages both as to your own business and as to why franchises are as they are. There is also a lot that many will bridle at, and many will embrace. Little of it is going to be original to the habitual reader of business books but we are not the target audience. It is not a polished business book such as David Maister would produce but the message is broadly the same. Good tip about Google Places which reminded me of another undone task.

O.K. but didn't realise how long ago it was written so things have moved on a bit since then.

I first read the Botty Rules 2 1/2 years ago and still use it as a reference now. Once I started reading I couldn't put it down...so inspirational and motivational - wish it was about when I started my first business 25 years ago! Implementation is the key because it doesn't matter how many business books you have on your shelf - if you don't do anything with the knowledge you're learning, you won't get anywhere...and that's one of Nigel's key messages.

Highly recommend the Botty Rules. If you only take on board just a couple of things he talks about, it'll make a positive difference to your business.

I struggled with this book from start to the end. Seeing this book in print must have been yet another ego trip for Botty.

This book has clearly been written for the very uninformed business person. In my opinion, anyone giving this book 4 or 5 stars on this site is either a friend of Mr Botty's, or a very deluded or naive business person.

Throughout this book Nigel Botterill tells you how wonderful he is at business and marketing, giving the most ridiculous commonsense advice.

After a career in Barclays Bank on a good 6-figure income he tells you how he initially struggled as a marketing consultant aiming to make just £20,000 per month, until his wife came up with some hideous venture of selling parish/community magazines. The rest is about his rags to riches story ... yawn.

If you are one of those people who are looking to operate a franchise business then this may be just the book you are looking for - you and Nigel may make a great team.

I think this book will be of some help to the really incompetent and deluded business people who know nothing about operating and growing a business, but otherwise, please do not stroke Nigel's ego and please avoid wasting your money on this dreadful book.

I am not really sure if this book is actually an elaborate joke or just plain awful! It seems to be written for either an ego trip or for the benefit of those born with their common sense gene absent. If you need a guide to what everyone else already knows by default then this book might be useful but if you are actually old enough to manage to order the book by yourself without the help of a responsible adult you simply don't need this.

You will learn nothing new, its packed with obvious comments and unsubstantiated claims, Even the authors credentials seem more than a bit freelance. Do a Google search for the author and see if you can find any proof...you might spend hours sifting through claims he has extorted money from naive victims! Finally, I found this book to be a total failure as a "literary guide to success". However, it did find a use in my house as a door stop, a function I found it fulfilled more than adequately. That really is the only compliment I can pay to this utter drivel.

Rather dull story with a Harry Enfield "considerably richer than thou" overtone.

My boss gave all his staff this book to read before we went to the Entrepreneurs Conference at the end of September.
And I have to say it really blew my mind - from a little Botty idea to a Botterhill way of thinking outside the box to make this man and his family "really happen"
Gives some amazing tips and to see someone going through the mistakes over the years to a successful man - there's hope for all of us!
