Difficult to put down. Well constructed characters. The bad ones are really bad. Joe and Ruiz make a perfect partnership.

I absolutely loved Shatter - one of the best thrillers I've ever read - and have been looking for a similarly gripping read from Michael Rowbotham ever since. But once again, I was disappointed. This story - which begins with the murder victim covered in blood and his young daughter the main suspect - is promising enough, but for me there were too many strands, too many villians, and also a plot too many. Whereas with Shatter the reader knows almost from the start who the villain is, and what he's doing, so the thrill of the book is the chase and the race to save further victims, this is a "mystery", and for me, the mystery istself was just a bit too complicated. The murderer, when finally revealed, was certainly unexpected, but it left me feeling a bit "so what"-ish. I ddn't really care. But I do like the hero, the psycholgist Joe O'Loughlin (who features in many, if not all, of Rowbotham's novels) - a well-rounded character, sympathetic and believable - and much of the writing was good. But for me, it wasn't enough. I wanted - and expected - more from this writer.

This is the first novel by Robotham that I have read. I chose it because it is part of the TV Bookclub. Not knowing what to expect, now that I have finished it, I can happily say that I really enjoyed it. I won't do a synopsis of the plot; there are enough of those. Instead, I will explain a little about why I liked it.
Although there are a few cliches in the story - the fact that the main character, psychologist Joe O'Loughlin is damaged is just one example of this - if you can get beyond these chliches, BLEED FOR ME is rather enjoyable. For me, the pace was good. Robotham's writing style had me turning the pages at a steady speed, eager to read just a little bit more. Coming from a background in working with women who have experienced sexual abuse, I found Robotham's handling of this subject very well studied. The details about grooming, and how this 'works' was very well put together. Likewise, the response of a victim and the personality of a perpetrator. And, even though Joe was the token damaged psychologist, there was enough which felt real about him too. Some of his ponderings about life and love were really insightful, for example how he states that "Love is either equal or a tragedy" has somehthing very true behind the sentiment.
BLEED FOR ME is a crime thriller which is not too heavy on the crime element, if that makes sense. It is not ver gory, and the death of one character is really the driving force behind the novel - it doesn't have to turn into a blood bath to make this novel readable. Having now read this and enjoyed it, I am considering looking for his other novel, SHATTER.

First Sentence: i should start by telling you my name, although it's not really important.

Psychiatrist Joe O'Laughlin is trying to deal with having Parkinson's disease, being separated from his wife and only seeing his daughter part time. When his daughter's best friend is accused of murdering her father, a former police detective, Joe can't ignore his daughter's plea to help.

I'll admit I'm always excited when a new Robotham book comes out and, once again, he delivers. From the very powerful and disturbing prologue to the nail-biting ending, I was completely absorbed.

One thing I really appreciate is that, although this is the fourth book in the series, he doesn't assume you've read any of the previous books. Without burdening the plot or slowing down the story, within a very short period the author does an excellent job of providing a comprehensive back story on the characters. You never feel as though you've missed something. The portrayal of a couple who are amicably yet needfully separated is effective without being maudlin.

I don't know how accurate the psychiatry aspects are; it does seem Joe is, at time, a bit too insightful for belief, but it works and provides some interesting observations. Having recently served on a criminal-case jury; albeit not a murder, I found his comments on juries fascinating as well as the demonstration that, with motivation, anyone can be pushed to violence.

It's the balance of introspection and suspense that brings me back to Robotham every time. The plot is complex, twisty and fast-paced. I liked that all the clues were there to identify the killer--yet I didn't--and that justice prevailed. If you've not yet discovered him, Robotham is an author I definitely recommend trying.
