"In Big Vegan, Robin Asbell offers an exciting collection of healthy plant-based recipes, from simple to sophisticated, for everyone who loves high flavor food made with real ingredients. Big Vegan will keep new, merely curious, and longtime vegans supremely satisfied from breakfast to dessert."
--Fran Costigan, culinary instructor and author of More Great Good Dairy-free Desserts Naturally
"This cookbook isn't about narrow labels (vegan) or even intimidating expertise (cuisine) - it's about delicious, flavorful meals you make in your kitchen and eat with your family. In an age of ceaseless foodie hype, Robin delivers food you want to eat - Monday or any day!"
--Chris Elam, Program Director, Meatless Monday
This paperback has the counter appeal and substance of a hardcover book. The chef-author's emphasis is on balancing sweet, salty, bitter, sour and umami.

My yardstick for a good recipe book is making 6 recipes or more. I've made twelve recipes so far, and many of those recipes are in rotation for being made again and again. I've served the food to omnivores and vegetarians, and everyone comes back for seconds. The day before yesterday I made the middle eastern cous cous with dates and almonds and the tortilla soup. Tonight we're having artichokes al forno.
The instructions are clear and work. The recipes are tasty. This is exactly what a cookbook should be. Highly recommended.
I've only been a vegan for 3 months and have already bought a fair few vegan cook books, many of which were bought with great reviews from Amazon but unfortuantely I've found them to be of the 'hessian sack' variety of vegan cookery (I'm sure many people will know just what I mean by this). Big Vegan however has managed to create a lovely balance of dishes with soups, salads, sides, snacks, mains, pasta, risottos, pies, tapas, meze, desserts and baking, the book is not too tofu heavy and doesn't rely too hard on health food shop ingredients that are both expensive and often hard to find, instead it uses fresh everyday ingredients.
I originally bought the kindle version but quickly exchanged that for the paperback and I'm so glad I did, it's a huge book that will be used again and again in my household, it's also a joy to read through and be inspired.
I'm looking forward to trying out some Spanish Tapas dishes this weekend with a selection of friends, carnivors and vegetarians and see if they notice the missing dairy, i don't think they will.
However, I have rated the book 3 stars for two reasons. The book has hardly any illustrations. Personally it helps me when I'm cooking if I can see what the food should actually look like. Secondly, the author writes that she is reaching out for a global market. As a British consumer, I find that many of the ingredients are a mystery to me and it is not always easy to find equivalents.
Perhaps my views of the book will change with use and I become more familiar with contents
Have tried many of the recipes and not had one I didn't like.
Great value for money.
I became Vegan on the first of January this year, and this was the first of many books on the subject I have bought. This book is brilliant, it really covers everything. It is packed full of recipes. I have done heaps and they have all been great, and there are still hundreds left to do!
If you are new to Veganism this is the book for you! IT shows you a new way to eat and cook, using foods and methods I knew nothing about before!

Some good ideas but too many recipes with containing Gluten and Fake meats, I think for it's size it should have had better content.Published on 7 Aug. 2013 by Rose White
