Review

The Baby Sleep System is a great book full of common sense advice for parents of babies who won't sleep though the night. Combined with the online support, it offers a lifeline to desperate parents - I wish Wendy Dean the best of luck. I wish this book had been available 30 years ago when we started our family, as we had years of baby sleep problems with our children! --Dr Chris Steele, ITV1's This Morning, Health Journalist of the Year 2007

About the Author

Wendy Dean started her family in 1999. She experienced severe sleep deprivation following the birth of her first child and used her extensive academic background to seek a solution. Since then she has written and updated the Baby Sleep System, runs Baby Sleep Workshops around the country, undertakes personal consultations via www.babysleepanswers.co.uk and has appeared on TV and radio. She now has 4 children including twins.

Do not buy if you want to use the website or get " one to one" advice as Wendy Dean promises. After choosing this more expensive book over others because of the additional support it offered, I was sickened to find that the website is no longer even active despite its continued advertisement as an adjunct to this book. Otherwise the book is a basic roundup of all the sleep training methods out there and this can be found in other more reasonably priced books.

The Baby Sleep System is a surprisingly short book for the amount of help it has offered us. Written in simple terms with no jargon it sets out very clearly what you need to do to help your baby sleep. Wendy, the author, has done her research and has boiled down many different approaches. In buying the book you gain automatic membership to an online forum. This is a stroke of genius and really sets this book apart from others that leave you with so many questions and no one to ask - you don't have that problem here.

Our 12 week old was dependent on his dummy to get to sleep and stay asleep. We probably could have tackled this with the help of people on the forum and referring to the book but we signed up for a 1:1 consultation with Wendy. After just over a week he was taking less than five minutes to get to sleep for both naps and bedtime !!! It is definitely the best buy of my ever growing library of books - they don't come with a manual but this is as close to it as you'll get!

My baby is 6 months old and after months of her sleeping in our bed and waking every hour this book and internet support has been amazing. Having daily support online made such a difference and my daughter is now, after 10 days of hard work sleeping in her cot, in her own room and last night slept 11 till 7!!! All without having to do controlled crying! I am sure there will be some blips along the way but even if tonight is terrible, I will know how to deal with it and have the confidence that we are doing the right things and going in the right direction towards many more sleepy nights.

A friend recommended this book (and website support) after I could only get my baby to sleep while breastfeeding. It meant I couldn't do anything and my son was never able to get to sleep by himself - leading to frequent night waking.

After reading the book and utilising the online support (wonderful, supportive women) I now have a baby who sleeps through the night, gets himself to sleep with NO CRYING for naps or at night and was slowly weaned off breastfeeding recently after returning to work.

I am not overexaggerating when I say this book saved my sanity. It was hard work, and at times I wanted to give up - but the constant support and straight forward advice made me continue and made us a success.

If you have any worries about your babies sleep and need help - BUY THIS BOOK!!!!

Great book - just the right amount of information a sleep deprived parent wants when trying to work out how to get their child to sleep better!! Clear information, highlighting why your baby is likely to be having sleep problems and then methods as to how to improve the situation. Really appreciate the way this has been written taking into consideration all the other info and evidence out there - wish I had found it first. The support forum associated with the book is brilliant, not only giving friendly advice, but also providing a channel to vent the frustrations!! It also helps to keep you accountable, and therefore you are more likely to carry through your plans. This sleep system is also an advocate of ditching the dummy - this is what really helped to sort our son's sleep issues!! I am now an evangelist of ditching the dummy!! Finally, if you are going to buy one sleep book buy this one (I bought others but this one is definitely the best!!).

We stumbled across Wendy Dean's book and online forum when my eldest daughter was 8 months old, when we were desperately searching for some help to get ourselves some sleep! I can't recommend her enough - she sorted out M's sleeping problems well within a week and my little girl has slept through the night ever since. The online forum (you get your unique forum access code with your book purchase) is a wonderful way to get extra support and to ask any questions you have about the techniques described in the book. We approached her again when my twins arrived 13 weeks ago, and this time via a private consultation with Wendy (available through her website) we're getting it right from the beginning. The pair of them are already sleeping through the night.

This book has been the single best purchase I have made for my baby, and for my sanity. I bought the book after 9 months of hell aka sleepless nights when at the end of my tether. The book doesn't propose any new sleep techniques, but rather summarises those already around and tries to guide you to choose one to suit you. It saves you reading all the baby help books available. I chose a technique and with the help of online mentors (an invaluable human touch support) results were seen after one night, and after 3 nights it seemed as though we had a different baby. I cannot recommend the book and forum highly enough. You must follow the techniques properly though, as there can often be something subtle you are doing wrong.
