Amazon Review

Auras is a personal journey through the author's own experiences of the human aura. Starting at an early age he has perceived bands of coloured light surrounding everyone, in a way that others rarely can.

Along the way, Ostrom expands his theories of vision and the complex structure of human auras, which for him consist of seven layers of brightly glowing bands, with accompanying rays and spheres representing energy exchange with other beings. He recounts examples from his life and career of teaching himself to interpret the colour symbolism and auric patterns, enhancing his insight into other people's emotions, their health and even their futures. This has enabled him to practice as a "metaphysician", or healing practitioner, since "the emanations from the health aura reflect a person's physical health, fundamental motivations, and the workings of the present personality."

He distinguishes several auric bodies, each representing different aspects of the subject. The health auras--physical, etheric and vital--are innermost, followed by astral and lower mental layers, with higher mental and spiritual auras located above the head. In examining these auras for diagnosis, visual evidence must be supplemented by the metaphysician's "Inner Eye" and intuition.

Some exercises are included to help you train yourself to detect and read these auras to some degree. Readers may wish to develop such skills to help others with health problems or emotional trauma, or as a technique of self-development and self-affirmation. --Frank Pennycook

From the Back Cover

Auras are layers of energy surrounding the body. ''Auras – What they are and how to read them'' offers fascinating insight into seeing and interpreting the auras of all living things.

There is a growing understanding of the concept of energy in the natural world – science, metaphysics and mystics are now together building up a picture of aura fields and colours.

Reading auras can determine physical and emotional strengths, diagnose illness and help us understand our connection with other living things.

Looking at the properties and colours of our auric fields, Joseph Ostrom shows us how to read and interpret the aura to create harmony and balance within our lives.

This is a fascinating and hard to put down book. It not only shows you how to read auras but gives examples of how to do it, which really helps. I could do it within minutes of reading this book. There is a section with questions and answers which is helpful on getting going and helps with any queries you might have. The author explains each layer of the aura in depth and gives an informative colour analysis section. Not only can I now read auras but I can actually interpret what I'm seeing. It is also quite easy to explain to others. Last but not least, the book also includes a section on the history of auras which I found fascinating. Definitely a must have!

As I work with colours and auras myself, I have read many books on the subject. Only a few resonate as authentic and this is one of them. He explains his life story in a simple but powerful way that leaves you in no doubt that he is gifted with seeing auras. He then explains in a lovely clear way what the colours mean and how he sees them in the aura. I learnt a lot and it also confirmed much of what I use in my work. Its a lovely book and I got a lot out of it even though I know much about colours. What a pity he has passed on as I am sure he would have had a lot more to give to the world.

2.0 out of 5 stars Too Uncritical 8 Oct. 2011
By RV - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
This book is way too uncritical and falls entirely into the "New Age" mysticism mode of thought. The Author recounts childhood experiences seeing "auras" around all things, living or not, and makes the leap that all "New Age" doctrines are thus validated. It did not help having parents which were "Spiritualists" also an uncritical tradition. By uncritical, I mean the author merely accepts "teachings" handed down with no logic or reason except that they exist. There is no pretense of reason. So my question remains "How do you know what you assert is really True?".

An inconsistency is also that the author says he stills sees auras today but then explains how difficult that is now yet it seemed to occur easily and naturally as a youth. But the biggest problem with aura's is that the belief is that they are three dimensional egg shaped layers of color and "energy" around a person yet the author clearly states that he sees aura's as two- dimensional cross-sections. I would expect a three dimensional aura would interfere with the clarity of vision that one would see another person with as the bright colors would blur the view of normal vision yet the author never even mentions that possibility. That implies that the author has a fundamental inconsistency in his beliefs as to what the phenomenon is. If they are 3D he should see them as such and the fact that he states he does not strongly implies he sees an optical effect or an invention of his own mind he has been conditioned to see.

Also disturbing is the unnecessary attacks on orthodox Christianity, like Christians are the scourge of the earth. Whether one believes in it or not, Christianity and Christians are factually not the source of most wars or problems on this earth as stated. He presents a grossly distorted view and a fundamental misunderstanding of what the central message and purpose of Christ and his teachings are. That makes one truly suspicious as to his motives.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating...informative...friendly 5 Dec. 2000
By Linda Capobianco - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Auras is a great book! The author can read auras and gives examples of how he does this and how you can do it too. He has a question and answer section and teaches you how to heal and balance yourself by concentrating on your chakras and aura colors. The book explains each aura layer in depth and has an excellent color analysis section. It has answered all of my questions on auras and taught me more than I could have ever imagined. I already knew how to read auras but didn't know how to interpret what I was seeing. The author has taught me how to do this in a pleasant-straight to the point-way. The book also includes a brief history of auras and the people who have contributed to our knowledge of auras. I found this book very hard to put down and highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn as much as they can about the auric field.

5.0 out of 5 stars lots of information 6 Feb. 2001
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
I found this book to be VERY detailed, which may be too much information for me right now as I am still learning to see auras - but I definately plan to keep it on my bookshelf for the day when I need to know more about what I am (hopefully) seeing. It explains about the most intricate little details of auras, along with some anticdotes. The best part for me at this stage of my development is that it explains some exercises to help to see auras, which I was afraid it wasn't going to do up until almost the end. Until that point I had resigned myself to the fact that it was not going to help me at all, and be merely an interesting book about someone elses experiences. All in all, this is a very informative book that seems to cover most topics, and I'm glad I bought it.
