Auras is a personal journey through the author's own experiences of the human aura. Starting at an early age he has perceived bands of coloured light surrounding everyone, in a way that others rarely can.
Along the way, Ostrom expands his theories of vision and the complex structure of human auras, which for him consist of seven layers of brightly glowing bands, with accompanying rays and spheres representing energy exchange with other beings. He recounts examples from his life and career of teaching himself to interpret the colour symbolism and auric patterns, enhancing his insight into other people's emotions, their health and even their futures. This has enabled him to practice as a "metaphysician", or healing practitioner, since "the emanations from the health aura reflect a person's physical health, fundamental motivations, and the workings of the present personality."
He distinguishes several auric bodies, each representing different aspects of the subject. The health auras--physical, etheric and vital--are innermost, followed by astral and lower mental layers, with higher mental and spiritual auras located above the head. In examining these auras for diagnosis, visual evidence must be supplemented by the metaphysician's "Inner Eye" and intuition.
Some exercises are included to help you train yourself to detect and read these auras to some degree. Readers may wish to develop such skills to help others with health problems or emotional trauma, or as a technique of self-development and self-affirmation. --Frank Pennycook

An inconsistency is also that the author says he stills sees auras today but then explains how difficult that is now yet it seemed to occur easily and naturally as a youth. But the biggest problem with aura's is that the belief is that they are three dimensional egg shaped layers of color and "energy" around a person yet the author clearly states that he sees aura's as two- dimensional cross-sections. I would expect a three dimensional aura would interfere with the clarity of vision that one would see another person with as the bright colors would blur the view of normal vision yet the author never even mentions that possibility. That implies that the author has a fundamental inconsistency in his beliefs as to what the phenomenon is. If they are 3D he should see them as such and the fact that he states he does not strongly implies he sees an optical effect or an invention of his own mind he has been conditioned to see.
Also disturbing is the unnecessary attacks on orthodox Christianity, like Christians are the scourge of the earth. Whether one believes in it or not, Christianity and Christians are factually not the source of most wars or problems on this earth as stated. He presents a grossly distorted view and a fundamental misunderstanding of what the central message and purpose of Christ and his teachings are. That makes one truly suspicious as to his motives.
