I have been fascinated by the Anglo-Saxons ever since I first saw the Sutton Hoo helmet. It is such an iconic and enigmatic object that one can't help but imagine what the people who created it were like. What was their outlook on life? What made them laugh? What made them cry? This book of riddles is a window into the Anglo-Saxon mind. The answers to the riddles range from everyday objects through to big concepts such as Creation. The riddles are presented in both Old English and Modern English which makes them accessible to both the casual reader and the student of Old English alike. All in all a thoroughly enjoyable book. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good selection of the Exeter Book riddles compiled into one anthology 25 Mar. 2014

For Anglo-Saxon students interested in studying the Exeter Book riddles, Porter has a good collection. May anthologies of Anglo-Saxon literature will include a selection of two or three as samples, especially of the most famous riddles. What Porter offers are some of the lesser known and obscure ones.
