However after reading the 'I Heart' series and 'About a Girl' (totally recommend) this book just doesn't quite cut the mustard.
It's good, it's not great.
It even failed my standard 'repeat test' when I tried to purchase it again, weeks after buying it the first time, forgetting I had already read it.
However give it time and a decent story does eventually evolve, though the epilogue is particularly annoying.
Worth a read but wish it had been more gripping to start, and left a lasting impression,
As the blurb is at the top of the page, I won't repeat it all here. The main character is Maddie, and she is the bridesmaid in question. She is quite happy to be a bridesmaid for one of her best friends Sarah, but isn't quite prepared for what a bridezilla Sarah would become as her big day gets ever closer. Whilst she is dealing with the wedding prep, Maddie also has to help her other best friend Sarah, who has just announced she is getting divorced. Maddie is really stuck in the middle, unsure of how best to help both of her friends, but I loved her! She is the perfect main character for the book - funny, feisty and gets the job in hand done, but she's still juggling her own job as well as the jobs of helping out her friends!
Maddie's job is in event planning, and I loved the storyline around her trying to get a promotion too, against her bosses wishes. The couple involved in the promotion event were simply hilarious, I was laughing so much as I was reading along, it was so well written, you could well imagine the characters asking for these things! How Maddie kept a straight face I will never know. Maddie does love her job and is very good at it, so I hated her boss for making her feel like she wasn't worthy of a promotion, but at the same time their dynamic was funny to read!Read more ›
As this delightful rom-com's title may give away, the story focuses on a girl, Maddie, who feels like she is always the bridesmaid; second best to her friends, sister and even at work she just muddles along without any real ambition. It has worked well for her so far, but she does start to wonder if there's more to aim for in life. This changes when one of her best friends is getting married and she's roped in, once more, to be the bridesmaid and basically be the person organising everything behind the scenes. It's not that she doesn't want to help her friend, she does, but Maddie starts to realise that perhaps the people around her take her too much for granted and she can be far more than just a bridesmaid in the background.
While I want to party with I Heart's Angela and Jenny Lopez, and go on an exotic holiday with About A Girl's Tess, Maddie is the character by Lindsey's hand I feel is most relatable to me personally. Sure, she ended in some ridiculous slapstick moments at times, but that was hugely enjoyable to read and underneath the laugh-out-loud moments there were some real issues dealing with someone being unappreciated at work, among friends and trying to find that magical one true love (something which most people can relate to at one point or another in their lives!).Read more ›
The story centres around Maddie, an events assistant who is juggling a very busy life due to her inability to say 'no'. Not only is she working on a project that could secure a very long overdue promotion at work, allowing her to actually have some control and be out of the way from her dragon of a boss, but she is also planning her best friend Lauren's wedding with no pay and with only three months notice, getting to grips with dating again after a long stint away from romance, AND supporting her other best friend, Sarah, as she goes through a divorce.
I LOVE Maddie. She is a brilliant, bubbly character that I was rooting for from the very beginning. She is all heart, doing all she can to support her friends and family which, often, goes unnoticed. I really felt for her when her dragon-lady boss Shona was being a grade A cow and taking advantage of her under-utilised talent. When she meets Will it's clear from the off-set it's not all rainbows and butterflies (just chucking in a Maroon 5 quote there to highlight my point) but you are still really hoping that it'll all work out for the two if them, so that she has some happiness in her life. I'm not going to say anything else about the romance element of the story as I don't want to ruin anything, but I was really pleased with how it turned out for Maddie.
The friendship element of the story is brilliant - raw and realistic.Read more ›
