Review

The detective novels of M C Beaton, a master of outrageous black comedy, have reached cult status (The Times)

Agatha is like Miss Marple with a drinking problem, a pack-a-day habit and major man lust. In fact, I think she could be living my dream life. (Entertainment Weekly)

Another winner for M.C. Beaton fans. (My Weekly)

Sharp, witty, hugely intelligent, unfailingly entertaining, delightfully intolerant and oh so magnificently non-PC, M.C. Beaton has created a national treasure (Anne Robinson)

M.C. Beaton's imperfect heroine is an absolute gem (Publishers Weekly)

The Miss Marple-like Raisin is a refreshing, sensible, wonderfully eccentric, thoroughly likeable heroine (Booklist)

I am a big fan of MC Beaton and Agatha Raisin, but this book fell rather short of the mark. The basic premise of the story was very good - but the structure and execution of the book is where I have a problem and I am not sure whether this is because I brought the Kindle version or not. The character of Agatha doesn't seem to be evolving or growing up at all. She displays the same sort of thoughts and behaviour in every book and this is getting a tad old for a character supposedly so intelligent and in touch - she is becoming unbelievable as a result (Who really meets a young man, and offers him a job and a place to live after 5 minutes, it's simply not believable). The use of the cast members is strange as well. They pop in and out, very quickly in some cases, and where they do appear there is no real foundation for this. The characters we are used too, who also don't seem to have developed at all, are all perfunctionally introduced to us - which we don't need, and seem to repeat the same behaviours of the previous stories - there is a total stoppage of character development and I found this really irritating as a long term reader of Agatha (Apart from poor Mrs Bloxby, who seems to have morphed into a love sick puppy - which is so completely out of her character it was frankly a bit weird). I also found that there were lots of nasty characters in this book and that Agatha her self seemed to be permanently cross and angry. There used to be a nice balance of people and these stories are, to me, 'light relief' and I feel that this book veered away from that to my disappointment.

I found the structure of the book to be a little odd as well - it was almost like it was written as a first draft and was waiting to be padded out in proper sentences and have the details and 'colour' added.

An irritating read, definitely not up to previous standard. I found the plot silly and too far-fetched. It was as if the author was just out to produce the next book and any old story would suffice.

I have read all of the Agatha Raisin books and look forward to the new release.I found this latest book disappointing with a very thin plot,a few historical errors and new characters that I could not warm too.I hope that the next book improves on this one, this is poor compared to the earlier ones.

I don't think I an going to read any more of this series. I have read all the books so far but am finding that they are all the same with a number of the same characters appearing in every story. The writing style is as if Ms Beaton is writing notes to put together a book rather than writing the book itself. Disappointing.

Sadly I did not really enjoy reading this. It rambled all over the place, with no real plot and a lack of characterisation. To me it felt rushed as if it was written to a deadline. Dashed off and not like any of the previous books, all of which I have read and enjoyed. Unless MC Beaton takes more care with the next book, that will be the last I read.

Loved it, had s slightly different feel about it than previous books, maybe because nobody tried to kill Agatha at the end lol. Will buy the series for ever more, always a great storyline and set in the country what more could you want ?

I've read everything by M C Beaton, and generally enjoyed them, they're lighthearted, easy reads, and although formulaic, a pleasant escapist read. I
This book seemed cobbled together, and just not as well thought out as others in the series. It just wasn't such a good read.
