Product description

Review

"An extremely useful book...answers all those questions other textbooks leave unanswered." --Anne Marie Bradley, Lecturer in EFL, University of the West of Scotland

*"Starting study at an English medium university can be a frightening prospect for students for whom English is a second language. 50 Steps to Improving Your Academic Writing takes away one area of concern by providing students with a step-by step guide to academic writing, ensuring they are able to write well-constructed academic essays. The book addresses the challenges facing every international student beginning a programme of academic study, and it is packed full of information that will be invaluable to students striving to achieve better results. One of the reasons this book works so well is that the '50- step' approach enables students to focus on those areas of academic writing they struggle with the most. The 'steps' take them right from the basics of academic writing, dealing with questions such as How is academic writing different from other forms of writing? to more advanced topics, such as plagiarism, the use of I in an academic essay, the use of unfamiliar words, vocabulary and collocations, grammar usage and final checks and submission. The real beauty of this book is the flexibility it offers both students and teachers. It can be used in the classroom, in small study groups or as an independent self-study resource. Students of all levels, from presessional to those studying for a PhD, will benefit from it, as will the teachers preparing students for academic study, who can utilise the practical exercises in the classroom. Overall, this is a comprehensive and incredibly useful book that I can highly recommend to teachers and students alike. The material is accessible and will ensure that this is not just another book bought at the start of term and never looked at. Students will want to refer to the text time and time again and will view it as an invaluable aid to their academic career." --English Teaching Professional: July 2012, Issue 81, Myrtle Harber, Swindon, UK" --Sandee Thompson for IATEFL Voices, Issue 238, May-June 2014

...an extremely informative book ...a sound investment for any student who wants to improve their academic writing in English. -EAP Foundation.com, April 2014 "Overall, I think this is a fantastic book and I recommend it to everyone who teaches IELTS, academic English or essay writing." --Sandee Thompson for IATEFL Voices, Issue 238, May-June 2014

Format: Paperback
This is a very useful book which deals with many of the key features of academic writing in English, from evaluating academic sources to using punctuation accurately. It has a very accessible style, providing tasks which students can personalise, and encouraging students to think, so that they can instantly apply what they've learned to their work on an academic course. The division into fifty steps makes it much easier to dip into than some of the other popular Academic Writing textbooks. You can find what you are looking for very easily.
I would say this book is relevant for Foundation to Master's level students, and not just non-native speakers of English - anyone looking to improve their academic writing. It can be used in class or as a self-study book equally well.

I am a lecturer at the University of Strathclyde. I often wrote essay feedback advising students to "revise their grammar". Knowing that cutbacks to the student support budget meant that grammar workshops were run less often for students, I eventually ordered this book in to the library. It is concise, accessible and genuinely appears to have helped students at all levels. I gather this book is now one of the most borrowed titles. I highly recommend this accessible and concise book to students of all language abilities and competence levels.

Finally, a book that EAP Tutors can dip into regularly for both international and home students. I've also taught privately with this book and my students have responded very well to it. Highly recommended for EAP Tutors based wherever.

Great for helping students with some of the intricacies of English academic writing. Clear format laid out to introduce the concept in context and then analyse issues that students may find confusing. Students are then able to progress by personalising what they have learned and apply it to a context that is relevant to them.

Also great for helping teachers (especially with so many less experienced ones entering into this rapidly growing field) identify issues in their students' writing and following a similar format to Sowton but using the work of those students as the basis of analysis and development.

This is an excellent book for teachers and learners of Academic Writing, especially since it deals with each element of the process as a separate step. I highly recommend it!!
