If you're after a basic Blu Ray player that just plays Blu Ray's well then this should be on your list. I appreciate that other players have wireless support to stream content from the internet wirelessly, but my TV already does this so I didn't want to pay the extra for functions that I didn't need.

It does have access to all the usual online content like Netflix, YouTube etc, but you must connect via Ethernet cable which may be ok for those that have their internet router near the TV, but possibly not for those that don't.

Picture quality and sound are both absolutely excellent with fantastic detail and great contrast and vivid colours. Speed of start up is also excellent, I am very pleased.

My only gripe is that is seems to be a magnet for dust, even when you try and wipe it off, it seems to attract it straight back, and with it being mainly shiny black in colour, this means a lot of dusting! Other than that though, I'm very pleased.

Sony BDP S1200 is an excellent Blu-ray and DVD Player with Smart Features like Internet TV, and can access Amazon Instant, Netflix, BBC iPlayer, Demand 5, Sony Entertainment Network, YouTube etc. It's a decent player with a great low price but when the price is low it must have come with some "price," right? OK let's start the review.

What's In the Box?
Sony BDP-S1200 Blu-ray/DVD Player
1x AC Adaptor (AC-M1208WW)
1x AC Power Cord (Mains lead)
1x Remote control
2x R03 size AAA batteries for the remote

HDMI (cable not included)
USB Input
Coaxial Output (Cable not included)
Wired Ethernet connection (Cable not included)

Stylish Design, Size and Weight
Sony BDP S1200 has a stylish glossy black design with angled - partly mirrored top, The player is compact and at the size of a 12" laptop, the exact size is 10.4 x 1.7 x 7.8" / 264.2 x 43.0 x 199.0 mm but less than a kilogram (0.9 kg). It's almost like holding a thick plastic case of that size.

User Interface
The user interface can be little confusing but easy to navigate once you familiarise it. I am talking both the navigation on the screen and the remote. If you are familiar with PlayStation you can easily understand the Xcross Media Bar menu, it's very similar. I have to say the user interface is a bit outdated, I guess it's made when Netflix was the big name in streaming video market...

USB Reader
At the front (right side) of the player there is a USB socket, and to which, you can connect your USB stick. I played an episode of Constantine TV series in HD - Matroska video - MKV (.mkv) file format, and it played smoothly and I am really impressed by that.

I was pleasantly surprised by the compactness of the unit. I purchased it to replace my Samsung one that had stopped responding to its remote control. I opted for this one as I have a number of region 1 DVDs that I couldn't view on the Samsung. Although I didn't need an HDMI cable, this unit has one included - handy for first time buyers.

Although it has a USB socket, it won't connect to the internet with a USB Wi-Fi unlike my previous player. Unfortunately the player is too remote for a wired connection so I cannot comment on the Internet functions available through the player.

After having little success with a LG Blu-ray player, this model seemed like a good alternative.

This little player actually exceeded my expectations in pretty much every respect. The picture quality is sharp and detailed and during action sequences there is no tracer/distortion, something that I notice on my other Blu-ray player that is two years old.

The BDPS1200 comes with a robust little remote control and a power adapter only. No HDMI cable, but this is common with most home entertainment devices these days. It does not have a display screen, however you can access details onscreen if necessary. Personally I like not having a digital display on it as the player is used in a bedroom, the only light on the device is the on button which is actually situated on the top with the light on the front edge. Next to it is the eject button, both are part of the same large flat triangular button, and these are the only controls that exist on the unit. All other functions are accessed by its small remote. The connections on the back are HDMI and an Ethernet port for connecting to your broadband router. On the front is a usb port.

The player comes with quite a few apps, including Youtube, IPlayer, Demand 5 Netflix, Love Film and Amazon movie streaming. Facebook is included also. There is even a Netflix button on the remote. The internet connection is easy and relatively quick to set up, so easy in fact that I haven't even read the manual yet. In addition to online access the player copes with pretty much all the file formats you can throw at it, MKV, MP4, XVID, etc which is really handy. The only down side I have found is that it will not read My 64gb SD card (in a USB adapter).
