Stylish Design, Size and Weight
Sony BDP S1200 has a stylish glossy black design with angled - partly mirrored top, The player is compact and at the size of a 12" laptop, the exact size is 10.4 x 1.7 x 7.8" / 264.2 x 43.0 x 199.0 mm but less than a kilogram (0.9 kg). It's almost like holding a thick plastic case of that size.
The user interface can be little confusing but easy to navigate once you familiarise it. I am talking both the navigation on the screen and the remote. If you are familiar with PlayStation you can easily understand the Xcross Media Bar menu, it's very similar. I have to say the user interface is a bit outdated, I guess it's made when Netflix was the big name in streaming video market...
At the front (right side) of the player there is a USB socket, and to which, you can connect your USB stick. I played an episode of Constantine TV series in HD - Matroska video - MKV (.mkv) file format, and it played smoothly and I am really impressed by that.Read more ›

I bought this machine mainly because I was looking for a replacement for my older Sony Blu-ray player (BDP-S370), which has worked (still works) wonderfully, but which has been made redundant by the BBC pulling the rug from under the support for its iPlayer service for this machine in September 2014 (with other pre-2011 Sony players). The BBC's move was unfortunate and costly for me, as the Sony system has proven to produce superior quality pictures both for DVDs (Blue-ray and standard) and for the on-demand tv services, like iPlayer, and I would have been happy not having to buy a newer Sony when the old one was still working perfectly.
My satellite receiver (Humax) does have online facility for the BBC iPlayer too, but its picture quality for the iPlayer is atrocious. Also, there's no point in buying some set-top box from a TV provider (e.g. Sky), who you are not subscribed to, as they are dedicated to their own services, which you don't use unless you are a subscriber (lots of redundant stuff).
But oh, joy! At least, the newer Sony Blu-ray players are still supported by the BBC for the iPlayer service. This is why I chose this player. You get perfect on-demand support for the BBC iPlayer and you can also use all other services it offers, including excellent DVD and Blu-ray playback.
As a Blu-ray player, this one, like its Sony predecessors, produces excellent quality pictures both from Blu-ray and from DVD discs. It improves the quality of pictures from normal DVDs very nicely through its upscaling feature. It also plays audio CDs nicely, if that matters to you. The simple little remote control works excellently in conjunction with the clear and easy menus.Read more ›
This little player actually exceeded my expectations in pretty much every respect. The picture quality is sharp and detailed and during action sequences there is no tracer/distortion, something that I notice on my other Blu-ray player that is two years old.
The BDPS1200 comes with a robust little remote control and a power adapter only. No HDMI cable, but this is common with most home entertainment devices these days. It does not have a display screen, however you can access details onscreen if necessary. Personally I like not having a digital display on it as the player is used in a bedroom, the only light on the device is the on button which is actually situated on the top with the light on the front edge. Next to it is the eject button, both are part of the same large flat triangular button, and these are the only controls that exist on the unit. All other functions are accessed by its small remote. The connections on the back are HDMI and an Ethernet port for connecting to your broadband router. On the front is a usb port.
The player comes with quite a few apps, including Youtube, IPlayer, Demand 5 Netflix, Love Film and Amazon movie streaming. Facebook is included also. There is even a Netflix button on the remote. The internet connection is easy and relatively quick to set up, so easy in fact that I haven't even read the manual yet. In addition to online access the player copes with pretty much all the file formats you can throw at it, MKV, MP4, XVID, etc which is really handy. The only down side I have found is that it will not read My 64gb SD card (in a USB adapter).Read more ›
