I recently upgraded from a plug & play Audio-Technica AT-LP60 to a Pro-Ject Essential iii A and was pretty nervous that after spending so much money I wouldn’t be able to hear the difference. I’m new to this! So knowing I needed a phono stage I complimented my new turntable with Pro-Ject’s Phono Box. It arrived before the Essential and I was curious to how it would work. So I bypassed the Audio-Technica’s built in phono stage and plugged it into this. The difference to my lowly turntable was night and day. This made a tremendous difference. It was like hearing my favourite records for the first time. Unbelievable difference in sound quality. Now it’s plugged into the Essential and my vinyl is getting a whole new lease of life. If like me you’re nervous about spending money on something you’re not quite sure how or if it works, then don’t be. Incredibly easy to set up (why was I ever worried!) and the sound quality is fantastic. Put it together with a decent entry level turntable and you’ll never look back. My only worry now is how much this hobby might cost me. Next up, new speakers!

Great pre-amplifier for my 1970s turntable

Unfortunately the pre-amp facility on my 1990s amplifier died recently, making for very unpleasant listening to my vinyl collection unsurprisingly. Otherwise the amp was fine and I was not keen to replace it for that reason alone. Fortunately a small bit of online research brought forth this little gem; now plugged into the back of my amplifier and my turntable 'grounded' via its earth terminal.
For my ears (60s with high-tone hearing loss becoming more evident!) the results are excellent. An audiophile may beg to differ, but will certainly have to cough up a lot more cash to improve upon it.

I bought this to use with a Pro-Ject Elemental, which does not possess a phono stage, thinking that it should work well with the same brand....and it does! It’s a very compact unit and does not have a gain control, power comes from a wall wart.
The sound is pretty good too. I’m thinking of trying this with my Denon DP300 to see if it’s better than the built in phono amp which I’m currently using, in which case I will happily buy another.

Nice piece of kit for connecting a record deck to your amplifier. If your looking at connecting an older turntable with earth connection this is a perfect solution. I began using this Phono Box to play vinyl when my ancient amplifier developed problems with the phono connection. I ran this P B through the aux connection. Sound is amazing for this small box and sets a nice balance of bright and warmth. I've since upgraded my amp to Marantz PM 6005. Although the amp has a dedicated phono connection with earth I still prefer to connect my turntable via this P B. Really brings out the best in your turntable.

Purchased this Phono Pre-amplifier to resurrect our old Rega Plana 2 turntable which has been reclining unused for many years. Have it connected via 10m phono leads to an Onkyo home cinema system incorporating our original Kef Q speakers, and have to say that it sounds terrific. Forgot how good vinyl can sound. The Pro-ject Phono Box is clearly doing a great job. It is unobtrusive and has an earthing post required by the turntable. Not a trace of rumble,mains hum or hiss. Very pleased with this purchase.

If you just need a phono stage to get you started then this is a top value product. The sound is not super bright or crystal clear but it is very good when you consider the price. If you want something that is noticeably better you will need to spend 3 times what this product cost. I will upgrade at some stage but am happy with this phono stage for now.

Purchased after some research as I needed to connect some old technology (my dual record deck) with some new technology ( B &W A7 amp) allowing me to resurrect my old vinyl records. The Project Phono Box MM works well with the proviso that it does pick up a little hum from the deck if placed too close, this was rectified with some experimentation. I have had great fun listening to my old record collection brought to life with this bit of kit.
