Having been the proud owner of the Slingbox Pro for the last three years I decided to upgrade to the Pro-HD as Slingmedia had announced that the Pro was no longer part of the future path and would not work with Slingplayer for iPad. I thought I had waited long enough for the initial UK teething issues to be resolved.

I disconnected my Pro & dropped in the Pro-HD into the same audio/video wiring from my Sky HD box. It was up and running within 15 minutes.

Using Slingplayer on the PC the video is excellent, far superior to the Pro and in particular the HD channels, but the sound has an echo, the level of the echo varies from no too bad to awful. I could replicate the same using my iPad.
I did a search on the sling forum and it seems there are a few people out there with this sound echo issue.

Luckily I decided to raise the issue straight away with Sling, as they only provide 90 days of free support. So I'm waiting on them to give me a solution, or alternatively replace the box.

    Update:

After reading all the posts on the Slingbox forum and a lack of solution/response from Sling, I returned my Pro-HD to Amazon.
The sound was Ok in standard definition mode, but in high definition the echo existed in the PC app, but was more noticeable on the iPad & iPhone4 and even worse when using headphones.

So I'm back using my Pro until I hear that this issue is fixed and I decide to buy the Pro-HD again.

Be aware this product achieves its best resolution by way of component inputs. NOT HDMI. So if you want near HD signal from this box to your Mobile, PC or Slingcatcher (which it works well with) you will need to buy an HDMI to COmponent converter (I use eSynic® 1080P HDMI to 5 RCA RGB Ypbpr AV Component Video) to change from HDMI to those older cables. Also, as Sky HD and I assume other Set top boxes only have one HDMI output, then you will also require a HDMI splitter infront of the converter (I use: Cablesson® - 2 Way HDMI SPLITTER BOX 1x2 Port ). Despite this it all works well sending the signal from my living room upstairs to my slingcatcher using Powerline networks in the house. If you are thinking of doing a similar setup, it is worth pointing out that the HDMI dolby digital output from the Sky box does not make it to the Slingbox after all the converting, so you will either a)need to turn off DolbyD on your Sky box and select stereo output, OR, b)ignore the Component audio cables into the back of the Slingbox Pro-HD and instead route the S/PDIF cable from the skybox direct to the Slingbox as it will already be down converting the sound and thus you can keep Dolby Digital sound going to your primary HDMI device.

Since the latest Freeview update in October 2012, the Slingbox internal Freeview unit of the PRO-HD boxes will not let you scan channels in the UK in most if not all regions.

Any retailer advertising the crippled Slingboxes as able to receive Freeview channels are now contravening the Sales Of Goods legislation. The boxes do have a Freeview Tuner, but it does not work now.

Please read the threads on SlingMedia's Forum:-
    [...]
    [...]

This is a hardware/firmware fault. Sling Media who produce the product are ignoring customers who are asking for them to update the firmware to cure this. You will see that the Forum is monitored and the Company replies to questions on other topics, they have NEVER replied to threads on this issue, and some of the posts are almost 2 years old.

Anyone in the UK will NOT be able to use the internal Freeview Tuner unless or until Sling Media correct the fault.

While this device on paper sounds great, if you like me and many others want to connect this up to an HDMI video source for proper HD (such as a Sky HD box) then your spending won't stop with the Slingbox.

The problem is the slingboxes only means of receiving a digital signal is via the component video connection, and guess what you don't get on a Sky HD box.

Also, the Slingbox can only handle a maximum HD source of 1080i and not full 1080p. Be sure to bear that in mind when you want to connect the Slingbox in line with your TV as the output from the Slingbox to the TV will be in that resolution as well.

So if you want to connect a Sky HD box, or any other HDMI equipped device that doesn't have discreet component (not composite, don't confuse these) connections, then you are going to need to buy two things, an HDM to component converter box, and a set of component leads. This can set you back anything from another £70 to £200 depending on the device and cables you choose.

In addition if your TV doesn't have any component inputs and only has HDMI (like so many new TVs do) then your also going to need a component to HDMI convertor cable to go back the other way again, either that or you could buy an HDMI splitter box to send a signal to the Slingbox and the TV instead of passing through the Slingbox.

It stuns me that a Slingbox is being sold in this way to consumers, it's only half a solution for most modern HD devices. You'll notice none of their diagrams show you any of this stuff (hardly surprising) so unless you're fully up on your digital data sources, your HDMI and component vs composite your in for a bit of a shock when you try and set this up.
