My first 3d printer also. My machine had a couple of cosmetic marks on it, but I knew I was going to be modding the machine anyway, so let them slide. Putting the machine together was pretty easy, following the simple instructions supplied.

My initial prints were a little rough, but within a day, I had done the same as Mark S, replacing the bed bearings. I first tried new LM8LUU bearings, but found them to be as noisy and rattly, so tried some nylon ones that I had ordered at the same time as the printer (Igus® Drylin® RJ4JP-01-08 8mm Linear Bearing from a popular auction site), which fixed the noise, vibration issue completely. I also had fun printing the Z axis supports, noise dampeners and replacement cooler from Thingiverse, steepening my learning curve.

The bed leveling is a bit fiddly and frustrating. To save false starts and frustration, I decided to print pretty much everything on rafts, which seem to compensate for my shoddy leveling efforts, just takes a bit longer to print.

The printing software is supplied on the SD card is Cura, which is pretty straight forward for preparing 3d files for printing. So far, I find that printing at 195° with a 60° bed temp seems to stop my larger PLA prints from warping. I keep away from ABS, as it's too stinky, and I'm sure isn't healthy to be near while printing.

For £400, I can't believe the quality of the prints that this machine produces. The more I use it, the smoother the prints seem to become, even with cheapy filament.

One thing though; I read several forum posts suggesting wiping the film on the print bed with 100% acetone, to help prints stick better. I tried this, which pretty much destroyed the first bed sticker that came with the printer. Luckily Wanhao provided a spare in the box. I just wipe with it with methylated spirit now.

My Wanhao Duplicator i3 Plus needed some attention when I received it and set it up, the lower x-axis bearing rod needed to be reinserted in it's right rod holder. It was hanging loose from the left end when it arrived. A relative quick fix and the printer seems to have taken no damage, I tighten all of the lock screws on the printer to prevent further mishaps. It prints ok as far as I can see. It also did not have any washers at all at the bed levelling screws. I took a pair of scissors and made 8 thin cardboard washers for the heated bed, 2 at each corner, one each between the nuts and the heat beds electrical heating circuit at each corner to prevent electrical short circuit to ground. And one card board washer each between the adjusting "wing" nuts and the lower aluminium bearing plate assembly to prevent unnecessary wear from heatbed leveling nuts over time. The printer has a loud unhealthy rattling noise from the bed when operating, quite loud but if you press a finger on the lower plate near a corner it quiets down. It definitely needs some attention before it gets worse, but I have not decided what to do yet. Have read some tips from other i3 Plus users regarding this issue and they suggest replacing the y-axis long linear ball bearing and also to replace the lower bed plate to a thicker one, replacing the existing 1mm plate to a 3mm plate. I am not sure how this will affect the print quality. Definitely going to replace the bad linear ball bearing though. It seems to be a from a bad batch or something. Other than that, I got the Wanhao Duplicator i3 Plus up and printing pretty quick when I had mounted my simple cardboard washers and levelled the heat bed. I got a decent print right away.Read more ›

This is my first 3D printer and in all honesty i wasn't sure what to expect from it, I was however quite pleasently surprised. Minimal assembly is required, it was a simple matter of screwing in 4 bolts and plugging in a few connectors, everything is clearly labelled and it's almost impossible to get it wrong, all the tools you need for assembly are included. The instructions are in english and are clear and very well written they cover everything from assembly to printing out your first object to using the supplied slicer software (cura), the slicer software itself is simple and very easy to use. I was up and printing things in less than an hour.

The only slight negative mark I can give this machine is due to the bearings under the print bed being quite noisy, they also produce vibration which can make the print quality slightly rougher, it was however very easy to replace these bearings and there is even a video on Youtube from Wanhaousa that guides you through the process, it's literally a 10 minute job. Once the bearings are replaced the machine is very quiet and a real joy to use.

Ultimately if you don't mind a little mucking around to get the most out of your machine this is a great product, good value for money and well worth the investment, I'd reccomend it to anybody.

This printer is quite well made, with a rigid frame, and needs to be assembled, when you first get it --but that's just 4 screws and 5 leads to plug in. After this, all you have to do is level the bed, which isn't too difficult, and then you're ready for printing.
So far I've used the sample filament included, to print several small items, such as the Wanhao sample file of a hand and also some items from the internet (from thingiverse), and I'm really satisfied with the quality of them. Not everything prints perfectly though, but I think that it could be just the fine tuning of the printer's settings that's needed, or even the temperature of the room.
Providing enough trouble is taken to set up the printer, such as levelling the bed, it can produce good quality prints. They do have a texture to them, which looks OK, but they can be sanded and painted if required.
Even though I haven't seen another printer to compare it with, I think I've bought the right one and would recommend it.
