cyberpunkdreams: cincinnati stories Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 16 ratings

"A masterful exercise in future noir … wonderfully dark, dirty and dangerous” Rich Cosgrove, Shadowlocked

Encroaching dust bowl. Environmental degradation. Climate change. Water shortages. Dangerous political polarisation. Class war.

The United States is broken. Torn apart by wars of secession, ecological disaster and political conflict. The mid-west, poisoned by biological and chemical weapons, has become a barren, infertile wasteland. The cities have succumbed to rampant corruption and urban decay, straining under the weight of the ensuing refugee crisis. On the border of order and chaos, civilization and barbarism, lies the city of Cincinnati.

17 interlinked short stories and dossiers. This is bleak, uncompromising cyberpunk. This is our future.

"Vivid, visceral, and violent … I’m excited about what is to come.” Isaac Wheeler, Neon Dystopia

I really the author's approach in this book. It is a a collection of individual short stories that stand on their own and yet can be read like a novel. That felt a little different for me and I really enjoyed it. I think it must be very difficult to write like that and thus it is to be applauded. It reminded me a lot of the narrative structure of a Tarantino film, Pulp Fiction in particular.

I love cyberpunk and this collection has all the elements one would expect. It doesn't feel as desolate as others and I think that is a good thing. It makes the book really readable and you feel a connection with the characters. I do hope the author produces another collection in a similar vein. it would also be excellent to see some of the really strong characters in this collection developed further.

This book was my introduction to Cyberpunk and the thing that impressed me was how the world setting never felt like it was dragging me away from the characters that build the story. Unlike some “high sci fi” books where you struggle to keep track of all the made up names for planets and factions, cyberpunkdreams welcomes you into a world that isn’t your own, but that you understand deep down. When I finished this collection of short stories (which are interconnected) I was left wanting more. What other aspects of this world have we not seen yet? What lies in store for the characters that survived their harsh lives? Looking forward to whatever comes next.

This book is the tireless work of a dedicated author. Chant paints a dark picture of a desolate future, where extreme violence and societal decay are the norm. Its not too far from where we are today, with corporations taking over and enslaving the public, while feeding us poisons and turning a blind eye to the harm they cause.

This book did not disappoint. An awesome blend of gritty cyberpunk and dystopian, epic SF. Each story can be read separately but the real magic is in the interplay between each one (they are all connected). Five stars & can't wait for the next installment.

We don't need a big war or a destructive AI overlord to slowly slip into the world of cyberpunk Cincinnati. The stories feel human, everyone is fighting for survival until they drop, the world or their inner struggle will always catch up. What will we do when these Cyberpunk dreams will become reality? Definitely worth a read (or two).

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Cyberpunk

I'm always on the lookout for a good cyberpunk novel, so I sample a lot of them. Most turn out to be amateurish and lose me quickly. This collection of interconnected stories hooked me from the start. The writing is brutal and sublime. The world is a living, coughing, hard-boiled beautiful mess. The characters, in all their twisted and tragic glory, stalk the back alleys of my mind once their stories are done. I want much more of this.

A nice collection of stories by the writer behind cyberpunkdreams serving as an introduction to his world. I suggest picking this up and giving it a read while we wait for launch of his main project.

4.0 out of 5 stars Humm-Cyberpunk first read for me

Well, lots of small chapters that all tie in and each makes more sense as you read the whole book. A quick read. Well paced. Some stomach turning for me and I guess not for the faint of heart. Easy on my Kindle app on an iPad mini.
