I have been so inspired by Alex's enthusiasm that I ordered the liner, taking advantage of the 10% discount mentioned in the book, and have dug a pond 4 x 2.5 mts. I have followed all of Alex's instructions right down to the plants.
This man really does know what he is writing about, there are very informative chapters on the breeding and hibernating habits of all the wildlife you are likely to get in your own pond, I was fascinated by it,
I have also suggested the book and the making of a small pond to two of my friends, so now even more wildlife can enjoy.
At this price you cannot go wrong, please have a go at making a pond, however small, the benefits to the wildlife and to yourself are marvelous.
3 year update,
My pond is doing really well, thanks to Alex's instructions, the whole thing is flourishing, no pond weed/green slime, lots of creatures in there, most eating my tadpoles I think😀.
All round a very good little book.
I like that he takes a low tech approach, so a lot of the time he is suggesting the cheaper, easier way of doing things and telling you what you won't need (pumps, filters, lots of plants, etc). His approach is to look at what nature does naturally and use that to work out what will best encourage local wildlife to your pond. If, like me, you have a small garden and not much room for a pond, this book is good as the author includes ideas for even the tiniest area.
I enjoyed the author's enthusiasm for his subject - his passion for wildlife comes across very strongly and is a pleasure to read about, and he is also very encouraging to readers to have a go at pond building.
It's a short book but no worse for that - it's a quick and easy read. Its main shortcoming is that (presumably because it was self-published) it's not been well edited or proof-read, so the text rambles a bit in places, and there are quite a few grammar or spelling mistakes. Having said that, it's a low-priced book and includes good info so is good value for money, and I would recommend it because of the author's knowledge and enthusiasm.
