Product description

Review

'The dozen or so destinations that make up this brilliant collection of stories are places of myth; myths imposed as much from the inside as from the relentless spew of tourists and migrants that pass through its veins from the outside. Rodge Glass manages to get right under the skin of these familiar yet constantly shifting landscapes and effectively bring them to life, but it is his ability to get under the skin of the myths themselves and then make them resonate in a fresh and original way that will elevate LOVESEXTRAVELMUSIK to an influential and significant piece of literary fiction. If Raymond Carver and Kafka were put in a room together and asked to rewrite a Lonely Planet Guide for 2013, then I guess it would look something like this.' --Helen Walsh author of Brass, Go to Sleep and Once Upon a Time in England

'Never before has the impact of low cost international travel on modern lives been so thoughtfully considered and brilliantly captured... beautiful, profound, sometimes heartbreaking, this literary triumph shows the levelling impact of low cost air travel... Laugh, be moved and consider the question: are you part of the easyJet generation?' --Traveller Magazine

'Rodge Glass eagerly awaited new book LoveSexTravelMusik is potentially one of the most perceptive pieces of modern writing to date. With bright, bold prose, Glass breathes new life into the exotic cities that have been reduced to a few empty paragraphs in travel guides.' --Karyn Dougan, The List

'Reader, prepare to hit the gate running, strap yourself in and await the bumps, the vertiginous take-off, aerial limbo, high suspense, plus in-flight, trolley-borne heavy snacks with their flavours of loneliness, dissatisfaction insecurity, anxious laughter, thoughtless selfishness, some laced with flashes of distraction, fantasy, and hope.' --Tom Adair, The Scotsman

'With LoveSexTravelMusik, Rodge Glass has produced a compelling set of tales for our time, tales of displacement and misplacement in a contemporary world where distances between countries have never been so short, gaps between individuals so wide and the cracks within the self so great.' --Shortlyspeaking.wordpress.com --Traveller Magazine

The stories of "LoveSexTravelMusik" are the right length for picking up and reading one at a time, but I read the book within one afternoon, and it delivered a satisfying 200+ pages narrative. There are different characters, with different values, different aims and ideals (some of them travel from one story to the other, characters, as well as ideas). The author, Rodge Glass, effortlessly gets into the hearts and souls of different protagonists populating his stories, to reveal their thought and musings and rationale for their actions.

This is not a collection of happy stories about wandering the world, and it never claimed to be. "LoveSexTravelMusik" comprises of mostly sad musing about our world, relationship, loneliness, reaching out to the fellow people, and travel, of course. The melancholy narrative is often sweetened with the so-called "Orientation" stories, in which Glass' humour is apparent.

After reviewing, my mind wonders about the 1-star reviews (claiming the stories were just about sex and alcohol and nothing more) - yes, some stories of this collection are of lower than average quality, and I am not at all keen on the title, but the book does not deserve a one star. It absolutely deserves more. Three and a half to four stars (but you have to love short stories).

P.S. Let me explain the title - Kurt Vonnegut once said, what zen is in Eastern meditation, can be achieved by reading short stories, he called the practice "Buddhist Catnaps".

Seriously entertaining - Rodge Glass has nailed this whole host of emotions and sensations that only some time abroad can bring out in a person. Sexual frustration, alienation, moral abandon; Glass plunges his cast of misfits into this heady mixture, and offers them nothing in the way of a life-jacket. As the Andre Gide quote which Glass returns to throughout the book says, `out of disappointment, I have acquired an unexpected education'.

I can't say I'd ever considered Easyjet's role in the psyche of the modern traveler - I certainly am now! It's probably for this reason I found that the stories all tied together really well - you'll definitely want to finish off the whole thing.

Found it very hard to get into and boring once had. The first story was rubbish but gave the benefit of doubt only to abandon after two more!

As a regular traveller I love hearing about other peoples travel stories. The first chapter was boring, the second even worse and after trying to get into the third I gave up.
Holidays don't have to be about sex, drugs and alcohol to be fun, but I wouldn't want to go on holiday with the author of this book.. far too boring for me!!
The stories have no substance at all, even though all the reviews when I bought it were 5 stars... I can only assume that someone (the author?!) may have written their own reviews!

I really enjoyed this book of short stories, perfect for my commute into work, each story takes about 15-20 mins to read. There's a couple of dull ones, hence the 4, but overall they are really interesting and thought provoking at times.

I can't quite get into the writing style so it's taking a while to get through this book. Some stories are better than others. Horses for courses I suppose, it might be right for you.

All the stories seem to be about unhappy people/situations. If you want uplifting travel tales which inspire you to go somewhere - this is not the book for you.
