This is the infamous book which was dictated to Aleister Crowley by the Praetor-Human entity, Aiwass, in Cairo in April 1904, revealing the coming of the New Aeon of Horus, with Aleister as its Prophet. One of its main messages, "Do What Thou Wilt Shall Be The Whole Of The Law", must rank as the most misunderstood, misappropriated and misinterpreted dictums in the history of Occultism. The phrase is directly connected to Crowley's concept of the True Will, which each individual human being must discover for him/herself. The idea is to honestly and objectively pursue this goal until the everyday facade, or persona, that a person wears throughout his/her existence is no longer necessary and may be utterly rejected. One's True Will, Destiny or status thus revealed in the scheme of human existence may be found to contrast sharply with the role one has been unwittingly playing all one's life: in many instances a falsehood imposed upon the individual by the exterior, socio-political and religious forces of societal conformity. This is why Crowley also stated: "The word of Sin is Restriction." He was acutely aware that the true identities and purposes of human beings had been crushed for generations by the Christian Empire. The Book Of The Law stated that this "Old Aeon" was about to be destroyed, and clearly outlined several, unambiguous predictions in respect of the rest of the 20th Century, which overtly manifested in reality. The text not only predicted the rise of Adolf Hitler and the coming of the two world wars, but also the turbulence and chaos of the 1960's, including the emergence of "youth-culture". Curiously, it was towards the end of that same decade that Aleister's own popularity re-emerged and then flourished - big time.Read more ›

As you can tell from the other reviews of this book, it provokes a wide range of reactions from its readers. To some it's an idol; to others, a comic book. The book itself says, "The fool readeth this Book of the Law, and its comment; & he understandeth it not. Let him come through the first ordeal, & it will be to him as silver. Through the second, gold. Through the third, stones of precious water. Through the fourth, ultimate sparks of the intimate fire. Yet to all it shall seem beautiful. Its enemies who say not so, are mere liars." I would suggest that no one buy this book unless they are prepared to find it either disappointing or transformative.

Been reading/studying this Book of the LAW for almost 30 years. Throughout this time, i have had a love hate relationship with the Work'.
Sometimes i couldn't bear to look at it, other times couldn't put the bloody thing down, especially when i first read it. Nowadays, i have reached the conclusion that if one is to understand any of it, the being concerned must of attained some degree of self awareness, or at least be searching, and if this is the path you have chosen for yourself, you have most certainly realised by now that You never had a choice.

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.
These are hard words to live by. What is my true will? How do I go about doing it? The Book of The Law tells how. No, not is straight forward, simplistic language, nor in rules or dogma to be followed without question, like sheep to the slaughter. But it does answer them for those who will listen.
Read The Book of the Law. Put it down. Cogitate on it. Read it again. Then again. Then read the extended commentary "The Law is For All". You may not come away from the experience as a Thelemite, but you will come away changed for the better. I did, after a thirty year spiritual search to litteraly the four corners of the World.
Love is the Law, Love under Will.

Read the book. Try and read Crowley's handwriting. Wonder what that was all about. Read it again and find interesting lines. Completely ignore all the warnings about studying and typing it. Wonder again, what all that was about. Repeat until bored. I loved it.

a lot of what is written can be portrayed in todays world, especially int the entertainment industry. pay attention to the way it is written and the detail of symbolism to find out truly why, people want to believe this book should be a worshiped guidance of the minorities in the world today. this book is in the hands of governments, dictators and tyrants many of which play a role in the super powers of the world. I feel those whom have lost faith in religion, perhaps need answers to why life is being treating them unfairly, even to some extent can relate to you will find answers to those questions you seem to need answers too. The author is very smart and ends the book with a reverse psychological comment, as if to drag the reader into his way of thinking. the thought of there being a devil must surely give people whom have lost faith reason to believe there must be a "Saviour" "god-like figure head" "priest" "king" in which we can all begin to believe in once more. eye for an eye is the uttermost core and root to all unlawful acts. when will it end?
