I recently purchased the Byron as a replacement for my now lost Soundmagic E10C, and I have to say that I haven’t been particularly impressed.

The jack housing is nowhere near the quality of the Soundmagic E10 and the cable feels a lot cheaper than the E10 which had a really nice tangle-free aspect to it. These actually feel a lot closer to the much older (and cheaper!) Soundmagic PL11 that I still have knocking around.

Don't get me wrong, the Byron is a pretty good earphone, but I feel like in comparison to the Soundmagic E10 (which is what everyone seems to be comparing it to), it just doesn't come close. I normally really trust What Hifi but I feel like I've been let down by them here; I wish I'd trusted my gut and gone with the E10C again. The sound you get here is good but it felt a little bit flat compared to other earphones I have owned. The detail was certainly lacking a bit in the midrange.

Maybe these just need a bit of burn-in time, I'm not sure. I'll update as I see necessary but my main concern is with the plasticy feel of the earphones. They don't feel like £50 commuter earphones to me. Hopefully I'm proven wrong, but if I had the chance to go back I'd definitely buy the Soundmagic E10C instead.

I purchased a set of SoundMagic E10s back in June 2013. They've served me very well over that time, used daily on my commute from Glasgow <> Edinburgh. Miraculously, they even survived a recent trip into the washing machine. They are rock solid, and I like them - a lot. But it was time for a change because I now require inline speaker/volume/mute controls for work purposes.

Amazon wasn't making this requirement abundantly clear wrt the latest SoundMagics and I was pondering which model to buy when along came a 5 star review from What Hi-Fi, stating that the Beyerdynamic Byrons were the new in the ear kings.

Having purchased the Byrons, and carried out side by side listenings with my AKG reference headphones as a baseline, I have to agree! Sound wise I find the Byron has a warmer, deeper sound; verging on too bass heavy at times. In comparison I find the E10 a bit too bright.

Crucially they are physically slighter smaller (length-wise) than the SoundMagic E10s. This makes them a more comfortable fit in that, if I fall asleep whilst listening, I don't wake up with sore ears if I've subsequently rolled over onto my side - a marginal gain that may not be applicable to yourself!

Anyway, these Byrons do sound better, but remember also that I am comparing them to what are quite old SoundMagic E10s, and that a set of new E10s may be equally good!

After my Sennheiser Sennheiser CX 300 II broke I was stuck between these and the Soundmagic e10s after great reviews on WhatHifi?. Unable to decide, I bought both.

After days of switching back and forth I have decided that I prefer the Beyerdynamics and am going to keep them as my daily headphone. I would still recommend the E10s, and think they both deserve the title of best headphones for the price.

Comfort:
While the E10s come with 10 or so ear tips, the Beyers only come with 3. However none of the eartips on the E10 gave me as good a fit as the Beyers. The E10s furthermore are larger, and for me it always felt as if they were falling out and I had to wrap them around my ears to lessen the weight of them. The Beyers are significantly shorter in size and are far more comfortable.
Winner: BeyerDynamic Byrons

Build:
The Beyers are by no means badly built, but they are nothing special. The ear piece itself is a mixture or rubber and metal and I don't have any fears of durability, as is the remote. However the rest of the headphone is rubber which doesn't quite feel as premium as the E10. The wire itself doesn't tangle too often, but is rubber and not as nice as the plastic E10 wire, which feels durable and pretty much intangible.
Winner: SoundMagic E10

Sound:
Both headphones sound great. Neither are V shaped and sound relatively balanced. Both have excellent bass and warm mids. The treble I find interesting but is completely subjective I've found between people. I am quite sensitive to harsh treble and find the E10s to be a bit too bright for me. I occasionally have to stop listening and take a break after time. The Byrons are perfect however.

Bought these to replace a pair of RHA headphones which gave up the ghost completely just after the warranty expired. First impressions aren’t great – the packaging is a bit cheap and the units aren’t as solidly built as the RHAs. The in-ear fit is great though (3 sets of different-sized buds are included) and the wires are tangle-free which is an absolute boon if you carry these around in your pocket.

Plug the headphones in and the sound you get for the money is really second to none. The bass in particular is very solid and well-defined. Treble is good without being overly bright and there’s plenty of insight in the mid. All in all a very pleasant listen for long periods with a sound that isn’t in the least bit fatiguing. Outside sounds are also very well isolated. The controls on the wire work well and there is no ‘cable rustle’ to trouble your listening if you use these whilst jogging or working out. A small crocodile clip is there to fix the cable to your clothes for added security.

Highly recommended.
