The Kindle Storyteller contest is a literary prize for authors who publish in any genre in English on Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP), our self-publishing service between 1st May and 31st August 2019.
Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) is a fast, easy and free way for authors and publishers to keep control and publish their books worldwide on the Kindle. Independent publishing gives all authors more choices than they’ve ever had in deciding how to bring their writing to readers. The availability of independent publishing options has resulted in a more robust and diverse set of voices telling their stories and then making those stories available to readers than ever before.
Authors who use KDP retain their rights, can get to market as fast as they wish, earn royalties of up to 70%, keep control of how their work is published, distribute globally and in multiple languages, and do it all for free.
Each Finalist will receive a Kindle Oasis E-reader. The winning author will receive a cash prize of £20,000 and a marketing campaign to support the book on Amazon.co.uk, as well as the opportunity to have their book translated for international sales. The winning author will also have the opportunity to have a mentoring session with a bestselling KDP author.
In addition, once the winner of the 2019 UK Kindle Storyteller contest has been announced, the finalists from KDP literary writing contests around the world, will have their books reviewed by Amazon for the potential to be adapted into an audiovisual project. Once the winner of the 2019 UK Kindle Storyteller contest has been announced, the finalists of this contest, along with the other finalists from other KDP literary writing awards from other countries, will be evaluated by a panel of audiovisual experts from Amazon, per the typical review process for local content. One book will be selected based on several criteria such as creativity, originality, storytelling boldness and audience potential.
The winner selected for an audiovisual adaptation development opportunity will be contacted by email or phone and announced on the Storyteller page and elsewhere around March 31st, 2020.
A development and rights option contract with Amazon is an agreement to allow Amazon an exclusive period of time during which it may develop audiovisual projects based off the contest entry in exchange for a fee to the author. It does not guarantee that a movie or series will be made. If Amazon decides to exercise its option, the author will receive additional compensation per the contract, and Amazon will own all audiovisual and ancillary adaptation rights in the story, as well as any productions based on those rights, in perpetuity. The winner will be able to review all terms of Amazon’s standard development and rights option contract before choosing to enter into the agreement.
Amazon has a professional team of creative development executives who are entrusted by authors to develop their stories for potential adaptation into audiovisual works. In limited circumstances the authors might be permitted to consult on that process, but this will have to be negotiated between the author and Amazon in the development and rights option contract.
