This is an impressive debut novel by London-based writer Alexander Gunz. Anyone who has walked the backstreets of the Edgware Road area or indeed the backstreets of any major city will recognise the characters and stage of this ultra-real tale of how tragedy affects us all uniquely. Central to the story is a senseless murder, but while it is the thread running through the novel, it is a quiet subplot to the simmering anxieties of the main players. Gunz has clearly done his research. Every character is painted in minute detail and though they only get a few thousand words each, you feel you know their motivations and desires well enough.
