Younger children should have no trouble holding and firing the gun (my 4 yrs old manages a little too well) however they may have problems cocking/priming it prior to discharge. Hope this helps.

Sorry I haven't tried it with chalk darts, it uses Nerf Elite darts (no sucker on them), in theory it should do if they are the same size.
