This should work fine as the 5100 has an infra red receiver in the front hand grip: Note that you will need to set the camera to remote mode and point the remote at the front of the camera, as the 5100 only has the front facing receiver.

I'm very sorry, but I can't answer that. I have a Nikon 1 V1, which is rather different. If the manufacturer says that it works it should. Not very helpful, but the best I can manage.

I didn't need to with my nikon d3200 but the shutter only worked on timer delay not live shots for me... which was fine for me but might be something to consider
