30 Pin is the original iPod/iPhone connect for older devices. The ligtening connector is much smaller andsupposadbly faster. The USB cable can normally be plugged in anyway up.

Yes it's a 30 pin connection so if the app is available for the nano you should be fine

There are two types one with the old 30 pin type connection and one with lightning connection(small) make sure you order the correct version the one I oredered was for the lightning connection for an iPhone5 yours will be the same.
