90% sure for external use only. To seal the inside you need to have a couple of 'smaller' fires first before proper use to seal as the smoke/soot is a natural sealer. I do not remember it producing any chemical smells when dry.
Similarly it is designed to be used on Chimeneas which get hot so eventually it will need to be reapplied, I seem to get away with doing mine every 2-3 years depending upon how often it is used. I hope that this helps.

I applied it on untreated terracotta and it dries matt, it soaks into the clay. I would assume if the paint is not creating a barrier and the clay is still porous then it will dry matt.

I don't think so. I used this on my chimnea and had it uncovered last summer and it was fine. I just covered it for winter and resealed it just to be sure for this summer

I only used this on the outside as instructions were to let inside be sealed by the soot to prevent cracking. So far so good as have used this several times and all ok
